EXPLORING THE LANGUAGE Nouns are names given to persons, places, things, virtues, traits, qualities, activities, physical and social conditions, time, groups, and ideas. Proper nouns Common nouns
Proper nouns are specific names of people, places, objects or animals. The first letter of a proper noun is always written in uppercase or with a capital letter. In the case of a proper name which is composed of two or more words, the first letters of all the important words in the name are capitalized. EXPLORING THE LANGUAGE
People, places, objects, plants or animals have general or universal names. There are many examples of each kind that are given just one name. These names are called common nouns . EXPLORING THE LANGUAGE
Virtues, traits, qualities, activities, physical and social conditions, time, group names, and the like are also common nouns. Unless they are in the beginning of a sentence or an important part of a name or title, these nouns are always written in lowercase letters. EXPLORING THE LANGUAGE

A common noun is usually not capitalized unless it appears at the beginning of a sentence, it forms part of a proper noun, or it is used as a noun of direct address (the name of the person or thing being spoken to). Examples: • An aunt is a double blessing. • Aunts make life sweeter. • Everyone says that Aunt Jo loves like a mother but acts like a friend. • “You’re like my mother, Auntie (Jo), only so much cooler.” EXPLORING THE LANGUAGE
