Introduction In the last five decades, the concept of women empowerment has undergone a drastic change from welfare oriented approach to equity approach. Women empowerment particularly includes control over resources and ideology. Women empowerment is a power to achieve desired goals but not a power over others. Secondly, it is more applicable to those who are powerless- whether they are male or female or a group of individuals.
What is Women Empowerment? Women Empowerment refers to increasing and improving the social, economic, political and legal strength of the women, to ensure equal-right to women, and to make them confident enough to claim their rights.
Women’s household decisions The data consists of women's four types of household decision making; own health care, making major household purchases, making purchase for daily household needs and visits to her family or relatives
Financial autonomy For women to feel financially secure, they have to understand the term 'Financial Independence', which is about deciding what to do with their money. This applies to both working women and also housewives. This awareness can help women not just save money but also invest in various financial instruments.
Freedom of movement It is affected by their characteristics like age, education, marital status, or type of family. Moreover, women in nuclear families are more free to move than those in joint family. Free mobility of women is another indicator of women empowerment. Compared to urban women, rural women have less mobility.
Political Participation Women’s political participation is one of the most important issues in context of women empowerment. Political interventions by women of India today range from movement for peace and good governance to protest against social evils like dowry, domestic voilance , etc.
Acceptance of unequal gender role Women’s protest against unequal gender role in terms of their attitude towards preferences for son, wife beating, etc. is another indicator of women empowerment.
Exposure to media The research of women’s exposure to media reveals that percentage of women not exposed to media is 88% as compared to men. A great percentage of women do not have access to media regularly which reflects the position of women is low as compared to men in regards to women empowerment. 12%
Access to education Women’s access to education is one of the important sources of empowerment that can be measured by gender gap in literacy rates and enrolment in different stages of school education. The participation of girls at all stages in education has been steadily increasing over time.
experience of domestic violence Women Empowerment leads to decrease in domestic violence. Uneducated women are at higher risk for domestic violence than an educated women.
