Work in pairs to identify subjects and verbs in given sentences and check for agreement. 1. My dog bark loudly at night. 2. The colorful flowers blooming in the garden. 3. The children plays games at the park. 4. The teacher write on the chalkboard. 5. The adventurous boy climb the tree quickly.
Rules on Subject-Verb Agreement
1. A singular subject takes a singular verb (-s or –es form)
The subject ( sunrise ) in the sentence is singular , thus, the verb ( is ) must also be in singular form. “Sunrise is a beautiful sign of hope created by God to let us know that life does not end after sunset.”
The subject ( CCLEX Bridge ) in the sentence is singular , thus, the verb ( connects ) must also be in singular form. The CCLEX Bridge connects mainland Cebu City to the Island of Mactan through Cordova town.
2. A plural subject takes a base/simple form of a verb. (The base form is the verb without any endings)
The subject ( butterflies ) in the sentence is plural , thus, the verb ( remind ) must also be in simple form. “ Butterflies remind us that it’s never too late to transform ourselves.”
The subject ( flowers ) in the sentence is plural , thus, the verb ( grow ) must also be in simple form. “ Flowers grow out of dark moments .”
The subject ( teachers ) in the sentence is plural , thus, the verb ( change ) must also be in simple form. “ Teachers change the world one child at a time .”
