1.0 Background propounded by William C. Bagley (1874-1946). c ommonly referred to as the founder of essentialist educational theory Started in the 1930’s to protest against the downfall of the standards of the schools. The first move begun in America through a group named the ‘‘essentialist committee’’. Aimed at advancing and reforming education to a rational –based system. a movement exercised to counter act the student centred educational institutes in the 1940’s in America

2.0 Definition of essentialism A practice of regarding something as having innate existence or universal validity rather than as being social ideological or intellectual construct. An educational theory that ideas and skills basic to a culture should be taught to all alike by time tested methods. A philosophical theory ascribing ultimate reality to essence embodied in a thing perceptible to the senses. A view that for any specific entity there is a set of attributes necessary to its identity and function

3.0 Main Principles Postulates core-curriculum which involves study of the environment, basic natural laws and discipline immature students have the right to guidance of a well educated, caring and cultured teacher. (Bagley 1938) Relative conservative stance to education, teaching students knowledge of society. studies should require thoroughness , accuracy, persistence , and good workmanship on the part of the pupils. knowledge is essential that everyone in a given culture must have in order to fit in the community. true essence exist.

4.0 Essentialism and Education Children should learn traditional basic subjects thoroughly. Essential function of education is to maintain achievement of human civilisation through a careful organised curriculum.( Gutek 2004) Education should teach students so that they can make a beneficent contribution to the society. Instil students with the essentials of academic knowledge.

4.1 Curriculum should be sequential from lower order skills to more complex high order skills. There is more to learn and very little time hence curriculum should emphasis on teaching essential knowledge.(Null 2003) Train the mind, promote necessary and ensure a common culture.

4.2 Role of the teacher Use deductive knowledge to organize instruction. Adhere to the structured curriculum of basic skills and subjects. Incalculate values of patriotism- hard work, respect for authority, punctuality and civility. Manage classrooms efficiently, effectively and fairly as spaces of discipline and order. Promote students on the basis of academic achievements not social considerations

5.0 Critique No attention to extra curricular activities. No freedom of choice to students. Teacher as the source of knowledge-no one has monopoly on knowledge. Lack of individual creativity among students ( Ersek , 2008) Children play a passive role in learning
