Domestic Hygiene
•The home should be a place where the health of family
members can be protected. If home design or hygiene is
poor, health problems can arise at home instead of being
prevented there.
•Domestic or household hygiene refer to cleaning of all
household parts, sanitary disposal of household waste
(liquid and solid) and human (and animal) excreta, safe
water (safely preparation and safely use), and safe food
(safely preparation and safely use).
Safe disposal of house solid wastes
•Every household produces waste (or rubbish) from cooking, eating,
sweeping, cleaning and other works.
•If this rubbish is not properly disposed of it will quickly attract pests
and germs, will produce bad odor (especially during the summer
season when the waste get rotten) in environment.
•If waste is left near to river, ponds, well or spring, there is the
danger that it will come to contact with the drinking water, and make
it dirty (contaminated). Also, if children get hurt while playing on
waste, their wound can become badly infected. In Afghanistan,
mostly communities dispose their wastes in unsafe places.
•Some communities think that this is the responsibility of government
to bring it to elsewhere.
•The main cause may be lack of awareness about the consequence
of this action.
•For a healthy life it is necessary that more types of solid wastes
(such as garbage, papers, plastic bags, etc.) should be taken away
from houses and should be disposed safely.
•In domestic level solid waste can be managed by sorting it.
Solid waste disposal system for a house should include:
•A small bin inside the house for daily use is necessary for domestic hygiene.
•A large bin in the yard is needed into which all the household collected
rubbish is put. This rubbish should be taken at least once a week through a
rubbish truck.
•When waste is left lying around it makes the area look dirty and it produces
a bad smell. It also attracts flies and rats and other animals which can carry
disease germs to the people.
•If waste is left near to the source of water, there is the danger that it will
come into contact with the drinking-water and make it dirty. When people
drink this dirty water they can get diarrhea and other water borne diseases.
•If children get hurt when playing with waste or near it, their wounds can
become badly infected.
•Therefore, waste must never be left lying around. It should be got rid of
safely. Find out where people throw their waste, discuss with them what
they do, and suggest what action to be taken.
•Burying or burning garbage at a specific area (as described in community
hygiene later) is important.
•Plants residue (such as garbage) could be given to livestock (if present)
after washing it.

Cleaning and ventilation of household components are essential for a
well-being state. These components are:
•Rooms:
Rooms (dining room, bed room, etc.) should be cleaned and their
accessories (such as carpet, bed, pillow and blanket) should be
washed and exposed under sunshine regularly.
•Kitchen:
Food dishes and equipment: The kitchen and its related equipment
should be washed regularly and should be kept covered (in a
cupboard).
•Bathroom and laundry:
Bathroom and laundry should be clean and their sewage system should
be maintained.
House cleaning
•Latrine:
Latrine should be cleaned regularly and there must be some water for
hand washing.
•Roofs of the above structures;
If there is something in the roofs, it should be placed in a suitable place,
because it may be brought through the air (wind) and which in turn, can
contaminate our food and water.
•Yard:
Household activities, livestock, wind and some other factor produce or
bring a lot amount of useless and harmful waste. Yard should be swept
every day and the waste should be disposed in a proper manner
described later.
House cleaning
•Afghanistan is country in which most people are busy in animal
tendency.
•Animal should be kept in specialized places and that places should
be cleaned on regular basis to protect the animals from getting ill
and not to spread their dung to other parts of the house.
•It is better to build stables far from the house to prevent spread of
zoonotic disease among family members.
