PRESENTATION ON: Land Resources GUIDED BY: DR. N . S. Sonawane SUBMITTED BY: DIPAK BORE (ME17F17F002) “ In Pursuit Of Technical Excellence ” GOVERNMENT COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, AURANGABAD (An Autonomous Institute Of Government Of Maharashtra, India)
Land Use World land use INDIA land use Wilderness Parks and Wildlife Refuges National Parks Wildlife Refuge Forests Forest management Deforestation Rangeland and Agricultural Land Wetlands and Coastal Areas Conservation of Land Resources Contents
Land Use Worldwide – A Global Perspective Land is a multifunctional resource and the amount available to be used for different purposes is relatively fixed.
Land Use- INDIA India enclose approximately 1.3 million sq miles about 2.45 per cent of world’s surface area India stands seventh in the world in terms of total geographical area 51.09% of the land is under cultivation, 21.81 % under forest 3.92 % under pasture Built up areas and uncultivated land occupy about 12.34 % 5.17% of the total land is uncultivated waste
Wilderness Areas Wilderness A protected area of land in which no human development is permitted . cover 156,700 square kilometres (60,500 sq mi) roughly 4.95% of the total surface area Wilderness Act (1964) Set aside federally owned land as part of National Wilderness Preservation System No development permitted (including roads) Some areas have a limited number of human guests to reduce impacts. Other problems include invasive species .
National Park System introduced in the 1980s Currently includes 104 national parks encompassing an area of 40,501 km 2 (15,638 sq mi ) comprising 1.23% of India's total surface are Primary goal Teach people about the natural environment, management of natural resources and history of a site
Forests The total forest cover is 708,273 square km 21.54 percent of the total area of the country Indian Forest Act 1927
Deforestation Temporary or permanent clearance of large expanses of forest for agriculture or other use World forests shrank 90 million acres from 2000–2005 Causes Fire Expansion of agriculture Construction of roads Tree harvest Insect and disease Results Decreased soil fertility Uncontrolled soil erosion Production of hydroelectric power (silt build up behind dams) Increased sedimentation of waterways Formation of deserts Extinction of species Global climate changes
Wetlands Lands that are usually covered with water for at least part of the year Have characteristic soils and water-tolerant vegetation Benefits Habitat for migratory waterfowl and wildlife Recharge groundwater Reduce damage from flooding Improve water quality Produce many commercially important products Human activity that threatens wetlands Drainage for agriculture or mosquito control Dredging for navigation Construction of dams, dykes or seawalls Filling in for solid waste disposal Road building Mining for gravel, fossil fuels, etc. Shrinking 58,500 acres per year
Agricultural Land Agricultural Land- useCategories As a percentage to Reporting Area As a percentage to Total Cultivated land 1960-61 2002-03 1960-61 2002-03 Culturable Wasteland 6.23 4.41 10.61 7.52 Fallow other than Current Fallow 3.5 3.82 5.96 6.51 Current Fallow 3.73 7.03 6.35 11.98 Net Area Sown 45.26 43.41 77.08 73.99 Total Cultivable Land 58.72 58.67 100.00 100.00
Conservation and Land Resources All types of ecosystems must be preserved Four criteria of importance: Areas lost or degraded since European colonization Number of present examples of a particular ecosystem (or the total area) Estimate of the likelihood that a given ecosystem will lost a significant area or be degraded in next 10 years Number of threatened and endangered species living in the ecosystem
