2. INTRODUCTION You must write an essay in response to a question. It is important that you write 250 words or more. You should spend around 40 minutes on this part of the test. Task 2 is worth 2/3 (66%) of your total mark on the Writing test. Academic writing task 2 is a formal essay.The common types of essays are : opinions, discussion, advantage/disadvantage, direct questions, solutions. All words will be counted, even small or repeated words.

6. Use the question to help you organize your answer. Check the general topic of the question, usually, a problem, a point of view or a statement with two opposing views. Make a brief plan. Use the focus points in the question. Plan to write about four/five paragraphs. Aim to write around 260 words. Work out how many lines 250 words are in your handwriting. 8. EXAMPLE QUESTION In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. Do you agree or disagree?

9. IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Answer. It is argued that governments should levy a tariff on junk food because the number of health risks associated with consuming this kind of food is on the rise. This essay agrees that a higher rate of tax should be paid by fast-food companies. Firstly, alcohol and tobacco companies already pay higher taxes and secondly, higher taxes could raise prices and lower consumption. Higher excise on liqueur and cigarettes has proven to be successful at curbing the harm caused by these substances. This revenue has been used to treat health problems associated with these products and has proven useful in advertising campaigns warning people about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco abuse. Tax from fast food could be used in the same way. The United Kingdom is a prime example, where money from smokers is used to treat lung cancer and heart disease. Increasing taxes would raise prices and lower consumption. Fast food companies would pass on these taxes to consumers in the form of higher prices and this would lead to people not being able to afford junk food because it is too expensive. Junk food would soon become a luxury item and it would only be consumed occasionally, which would be less harmful to the general public’s health. For instance, the cost of organic food has proven prohibitively expensive for most people and that is why only a small percentage of the population buy it regularly. In conclusion, junk food should be taxed at a higher rate because of the good precedent set by alcohol and tobacco and the fact that the increased cost should reduce the amount of fast-food people buy.

10. IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Answer. All over the world, many individuals use most of their spare time at home watching television programmes . The advantages of this situation are that they save money and don’t need to make plans, whereas the disadvantages are that they aren’t healthy and don’t feel a sense of accomplishment. The first benefit is that these people save more money than those who have other hobbies. Most hobbies involve membership or entrance fees that must be paid regularly, whereas watching television is comparatively cheaper and rarely requires any additional payments after the initial purchase of the TV set. Another key advantage is that those who primarily watch TV to pass the time don’t need to make plans. Many free time activities are done with other people, and it can often be difficult and tiresome to coordinate with others. On the other hand, poor health is a disadvantage for those who spend most of their leisure time at home watching television. Compared to people who have active hobbies, those who watch TV get little exercise and when this continues over a long period, their health deteriorates. Furthermore, there is the additional drawback of gaining no sense of accomplishment from watching TV. In comparison to the individuals who enjoy the experience of completing a craft project or spending time at the gym, the people at home watching television have little or no sense of achievement. In conclusion, anyone who watches televisions as their primary means of passing the time has the advantage of saving money and not being required to make plans in advance of their free time. However, they do have the disadvantages of not being healthy, and they tend not to have any sense of accomplishment from their hobby.
