ERIK ERIKSON'S THEORY OF SOCIO -
EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
We already know that cognitive, behavioral, and social
development work together with emotional development. In this
process context/environment also plays a role. There are various
emotional development theories but there is a common view on age-
related milestones in emotional development. Here we are going to
discuss first 4 stages relevant to early childhood.

caring environment is needed

Toddlers need caring adult
who provide a supervised and

The child becomes
independent and learns to
walk, run, build, draw, use
toilet etc. They feel
responsible and capable. But
if he/she receives negative
messages from parents,
caregivers, begin to doubt
his/her abilities and loses self-
confidence.

The children at this level exhibits the following timely characteristics
1.Children laugh when adults laugh. It shows expression of humor.

3.Phobias and fears up to age 5
4.At 4 years intentional lying may begin

Activities for Social and Emotional Development
That teacher should focus on basic emotions such as happy, sad,
angry, hurt etc.
Material to Be Used
Charts, poster board, markers
What to Do
1.Draw a happy face on the chart and ask the child what he sees
and what it means.
2.Ask him/har to tell the things that make him/her happy
3.Ask what he/she can do to feel happy.
4.Draw an unhappy and angry face and ask the same questions

Emotional Characteristics of Learners at Kindergarten Level
At age 5 children begin to control emotions and try to express them
in socially accepted ways.
Frequent quarrels among children but for a short duration
At 6 there is a change in emotions-new kind of worries arise by
joining school.
Anger outburst may appear
Sense of right and wrong.
At 6 acceptance of rules develops, rigid insistence on obeying the
rules.

Activities to Develop Emotional Skills at Kindergarten
Group projects help young children share and work together to
achieve some goals.
Materials
cardboards boxes, paints, crayons, markers
What to Do
1.Arrange Cardboard boxes to make a train
2.Ask the children to decorate the boxes and put them like a train
3.Support children in sharing material as they make the train
together.
4.Talk about sharing the material while they build and decorate the
train. Praise the children when they share.

Characteristics of Learners at Elementary Level
The learners at elementary level may exhibit the following
characteristics
Difficulty in starting things but continue to end.
Worries related to school performance
Beginning of empathy; sees others viewpoint
Sense of rumor expressed in riddles, jokes, and nonsense words.
Discrimination between good and bad but still immature.
Sensitive and gets hurts easily
Takes care of possession (make collections)

Activities to Promote Emotional Health at Elementary Level
Tone of Voice:
To help students recognize that how things are said can be
just as important as what is said.
The first child in the circle, “I love ice cream” in a bored voice,
the next child then says, “I love ice cream” as though she really does
love it. etc.
