DEFINING ACTIVE LEARNING cont. Active learning – Any instructional method which allows pupils to be engaged or involved in the learning process. Some researchers suggest that active learning typically refers to those learning activities that take place in the classroom and not activities like homework.
DEFINING ACTIVE LEARNING Active learning can also be defined as instructional activities that allow pupils to do things and think about what they are doing ( Bonwell & Eison , 1991).
WHY ACTIVE LEARNING? Activity 2 Think about TWO reasons why active learning is important at the early childhood and primary levels.
WHY ACTIVE LEARNING? There are many reasons why teachers should get pupils actively involved in the lesson: Pupils do not learn by just listening to the teacher and memorizing facts( passive learning ). Pupils must talk and write about what they are learning. They must link what they learn to their experiences if learning is to be meaningful.
WHY ACTIVE LEARNING? Pupils should be able to apply what they learn to their daily lives. They must make what they learn a part of their lives.
FEATURES OF ACTIVE LEARNING These are some of the activities that take place in an active learning classroom: Pupils: Solve problems Answer questions and ask questions Discuss, role play, dramatize Explain
FEATURES OF ACTIVE LEARNING cont. Pupils: Debate Read and write Brainstorm
FEATURES OF ACTIVE LEARNING cont. Active learning also requires pupils to be involved in higher order thinking tasks such as, analyzing, creating, and evaluating.
BENEFITS OF ACTIVE LEARNING Active learning : Increases pupil’s interest and motivation. Increases pupil’s involvement in their own learning. Allows pupils to practice their skills. Helps pupils to get a deeper understanding of content.
BENEFITS OF ACTIVE LEARNING Recognizes a variety of learning styles . This helps students who do not learn well by verbal/linguistic strategies(chalk & talk/expository). Helps pupils to develop thinking and writing skills.
SOME BARRIERS TO ACTIVE LEARNING Activity 4 Jot down TWO reasons why there is so much teacher talk or passive learning in the typical Guyanese primary classroom. Share your response with the class.
BARRIERS TO ACTIVE LEARNING Limited class time. Increased preparation time for teachers. Lack of resources, materials, and equipment. Class size. It is more difficult to implement when the class is very large.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES Activity 5 Suggest TWO ways in which you can overcome the barriers to you using active learning strategies in your classroom. Identify FOUR active learning strategies you would like to use in your Social Studies lessons.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES Suggest at least TWO ways in which you can use the theory of multiple intelligences to create active learning strategies for Social Studies lessons.
