On February 25, 2016, I was able to see the Mid Year Band Concert in the PAC.
The pieces I have chosen to review were performed by the Varsity, Symphonic II
and Symphonic I Bands and conducted by Mr. Bailey and Mr. Hillhouse. King
Cotton, Amparito Roca, and Valdres were among my favorites in the program and
are all coincidentally, marches. To start with, the Varsity Band performed a royal
march called King Cotton by Karl King. It reminded me of a Sousa type piece due to
the recurring melody and march style. As the piece began, the band played tutti but
had a mediocre balance due to the woodwind instruments, particularly the clarinets,

In the book, The Piano Lesson Augustus Wilson tells a story about his family who
is struggling with their past. The story begins with a Boy Willie coming up from
the South to bring up the idea of selling the family s legacy, a piano, which he will
sell to buy the land that his ancestors were slaves on. The only problem is that his
sister Bernice owns half the pianoand she doesn t wantto let him sell it. Throughout
the play Wilson portrays the theme that we needto forget our past in order to move
forward in life. We will always remember our past, but we should not let it limit us
to what we can do. The piano represented the importance of slaves during slavery
times. During slavery Slaves were traded like objects and were not important to
their owners. For example as Wining Boy, Lymon, Boy Willie, and Doaker are
having a get together around the dining room table, Doaker begins his story to

Serenity of the Field Essay
As I drive up the hill, passing the mailbox and the meticulously groomed lawn, I
find myself taking on a transformation. I breathe a sigh of relief and feel the tension
drain from my body in anticipation of seeing my place. As I turn the corner I see it,
to anyone else it just looks like a simple field. But to me, it is my sanctuary that I can

This was also true when we were younger. But back then, we fought over who
would be the lucky one to wear the tattered Kermit the Frog puppet when we

projected reduction in national dependencies on almost 4 billion barrels of oil and

fuel savings to the consumer and moderate environmental benefits offsetting the
