December is much less a month and more so an extended holiday, for the entire
month is time to prepare for Christmas. Everything in the stores, on the TV, on the
radio, and in everyone s houses revolves around the holiday. Christmas is a time to
celebrate with music, festivities, and food, or should I say Christmas desserts. I love
the sugary sweets that make my mouth water all year round until finally the month
comes to bake and eat the variety of treats. Oreo balls, peanut butterballs, chocolate
covered pretzels, fudge, caramels, and all the other creative ways to combine the
most unhealthy ingredients complete the holiday season, yet my favorite dessert is a
classic Christmas sugar cookie, a soft star shaped cookie layered with sweet yellow
frosting and dipped in a chilled glass of milk.
The second weekend in December is always cookie making weekend at Grandma s.
Traditionally, we grandkids spend the night on Saturday to help her bake the sugar
cookies; however, she has already made two batches during the day, so we help her
with the third batch. First, we gather all the ingredients; two cups of butter, two
cups of sugar, four eggs, two tablespoons of milk, six cups of flour, and six
teaspoons of baking powder. Grandma takes out her largest glass bowl, and we beat
the butter until it is creamy, for about one minute. Slowly, we add the sugar and mix
it until the ingredients blend into a light and fluffy mixture, making my mouth water
