Slide Content

THE FILIPINO WAY

WHAT IS MORAL IDENTITY MORAL - relates to the principles of what is considered right or wrong. IDENTITY - what do you think of yourself and what aspects and what aspects in living your life are personally important. MORAL IDENTITY - level of personal importance that you give in what you deem acceptable or unacceptable behavior

FACTORS THAT HELP FORM FILIPINO MORAL IDENTITY STRENGTH AND WEAKNESSES OF FILIPINO CHARACTERISTICS

HOME ENVIRONMENT THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT CULTURE AND LANGUAGE HISTORY THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

HOW DO THESE FACTORS SHAPE THE FILIPINO’S CONCEPT OF RIGHT OR WRONG BEHAVIOR

FAMILY - the most influential factor of shaping the Filipino moral identity

Father, mother, siblings grandparents, aunt, and uncles first degree cousins second, third, fourth…

Developing a close relationship with extended families over both the mother and father’s side

Filipino children are taught to value family and give it primary importance

SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT

Filipino social environment is characterized by depending on one another to survive.

Dependence on relationship and struggle for survival make Filipinos group oriented

Filipinos are cheerful and fun loving

Even in the most trying time, Filipinos will find a reason to smile and laugh

CHARACTER a complex or the inter related parts of mental and ethical traits marking and often individualizing a person, group, or nation (Merriam-Webster)

Pakikipagkapwa-tao - is demonstrated in our openness, helpfulness, generosity; the practice of Bayanihan or mutual assistance; the famous Filipino hospitality; and our love for family.

Extreme Personalism and Extreme Family Centeredness are weaknesses of the Filipino character

Filipino function in the world by personally relating to things, events, and people. Thus, making it difficult to separate objective tasks and emotional involvement ( Licuanan , 1994)

Preference in hiring , delivering services, voting someone into a government position

Palakasan System make it difficult to turn down personal requests

Kanya- kanya Syndrome is also related to extreme personalism and extreme family centeredness where self-interest is supreme

Kanya- kanya Syndrome dampens Filipino sense of community and cooperation

The family is both source of strength and weaknesses for Filipino

Political dynasties in elected government posts starting from the barangay level all the way to national positions

Filipinos are joyful and fun loving but had the tendency to be superficial and somewhat flighty

Filipinos lack analysis and self-reflection

Filipinos are characterized as “ Madaling Makalimot ” or a nation with a short memory

Filipinos forget mistakes committed and tend to repeat the same mistakes

The trait of “ Madaling Makalimot ” allowed trapos or traditional politician to flourish

CULTURE AND LANGUAGE Filipino culture is a mix of both Eastern and Western cultures

The belief and traditions or pre-colonial Philippines were mainly indigenous Malay heritage

Ancient beliefs and traditions have mostly been merged with the colonizers and eventually evolved into what we now know as the Filipino culture

Filipino non-formal written or verbal communication is a mix of Filipino language and English. Formal communication is mainly in English

Current trends in Filipino speech mainly among young Filipinos include some Japanese and Korean expressions as influenced by Anime and K-drama/ Kpop .

Filipino culture and language show openness to foreign elements but, with no basic consciousness of the cultural core of being Filipino

The English Language is central to Philippine Educational System

Filipinos prefer films over locally produce movies Anime, Mexicanovela , Taiwanese and Korean drama

Filipinos have a foreign iconic artist that influences the trends of his or her generation Elvis Presley, Beatles, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, K-pop

“Colonial mentality” the perception of ethnic and cultural inferiority and a form of internalized racial oppression. ( Decena 2014)

Filipino elite are very Westernized in their way

Philippine mass media create trends that further reinforce the Filipino’s colonial mentality

How do Schools and Religion influence Filipino Moral Identity?

Early on, Filipino children learn that good behavior, such as obedience is rewarded, but they will be punished once they misbehave.

Schools and religion, being authoritarian systems, help build resilience. On the other hand, it also teaches passivity, conformity, and a fatalistic attitude.

A “ Bahala na Mindset” is an example of a fatalistic attitude in Filipinos.

Positive side of “ bahala na ” mindset is that it moves a Filipino into action

The Economic Environment is another Element that the Filipino Moral Identity is Rooted

The Philippine economic environment for its part is highly affected by factors such as over-population, mismatch between skills and job requirement, and immense corruption in government

Other strong traits of Filipino: Hard work Industry Ability to survive

“ Matutong mamaluktot habang maikli ang kumot ” shows Filipino can endure, make do, and get by on so little while looking forward to the coming days.

Filipinos can carry on through harsh economic and social circumstance

The country’s political environment as well as government structures and system are fraught with problems.

Political power in mainly in the hands of the elite

Absence of a strong government presence particularly in the most basic government unit like in the barangay city, or province enhanced the Filipino’s already extreme family centeredness

Filipinos’ high respect for authority continued the rule of the country’s elite

Filipinos high respect for authority also led to a character of general passivity and lacking initiative

Filipinos strongly rely on leaders and government to solve the nation’s problems. Filipinos do not feel the need to initiate or contribute to the solution

Filipinos Lean on Leaders and Role Models

Thus, when leaders or role models violate the law and there is lack of accountability for those who broke the law, the level of personal importance that Filipinos give in the goodness or badness of one’s behavior is hugely negatively affected.

The Filipino character is a contradiction

Many of the Filipino strong points are linked to Filipino weaknesses

THANK YOU
