Evaluation System Presented by- Srijani Banerjee Paper- 1 Unit-1 Sub-unit- 6 PeEr Tutoring session-13.2.2025

Definition The Evaluation S ystem is a way to measure how well students are learning . These help teachers see what students know and where they might need help . Tyler defined evaluation as " a systematic process of determining the extent to which educational objectives are achieved by pupils“. Ralph W. Tyler  is known as the "Father of Evaluation " in education. He coined the term "evaluation " and is credited with pioneering the use of evaluation to align testing and measurement with educational goals

Types of Evaluation

Placement Evaluation linked to Michael Scriven ( not definite)  Placement evaluation is used to place the right person at the right place i.e students according to prior achievement or level of knowledge , or personal characteristics , at the most appropriate point in an instructional sequence conducted through  placement testing Placement evaluation, also referred to as pre-assessment, initial assessment, or threshold knowledge test (TKT). This type of assessment is used to know what the student's skill level is about the subject, it can also help the teacher to explain the material more efficiently . Methods - aptitude test, Self- reporting inventories, Observational techniques, entrance tests like NET, JEE etc.

Formative Evaluation Term coined by Michael Scriven in 1967 Formative Evaluation is inbuilt with the process of teaching and learning and is done during the course of instruction continuously with a view to improve students' learning . The teacher can organize remedial programs for them. Also provides the teacher feedback regarding the efficiency of the teaching methods , instructional design, course content so that the teaching can be improved. Methods - unit tests, informal class tests, assignments and other class room activities like observation, oral tests, written tests, etc.

Summative Evaluation Term coined by Michael Scriven in 1967 Summative Evaluation is the commonly known type of evaluation which comes at the end of the term, course or programme of teaching. It involves a formal testing of pupil's achievement . Purpose is to grade, rank, classify, compare and promote the pupil for certification, scholarships or for admission to particular courses. Also used to assess the suitability of the program for future, required alterations in instructional design, teaching methods, teaching-learning materials etc. Examples- Annual examinations and semester end exams etc.

Diagnostic Evaluation Ralph.W.Tyler – ‘ The Father of Evaluation in Education Diagnostic Evaluation is related to formative evaluation as it points out the weaknesses or difficulties faced by students during the instruction . It is most suitable to be carried out right after the formative evaluation if the later is unable to bring down the learning difficulties of the students by general measures of alteration of instructional methods or so. Although, if need be, it can be carried out alongside the formative evaluation as well. It can pinpoint the symptoms of the learning disorders arising because of physical, emotional or social reasons problems Works as a Panacea to learning difficulties. Methods -  pre-tests, observation checklists, concept maps, interviews, and self-assessment questionnaires.

Norm Referenced Evaluation Coined by Robert Glaser in 1963 In this test, a learner's version is likened to that of the others in the group who have also taken that same test or assessment. Students are given ranks relative to their respective marks or grades. Com parative in nature Examples- Ranks on Classroom tests or standardized summative tests, public examinations like NET, NEET, CAT etc.

Criterion Referenced Evaluation Coined by Robert Glaser in 1963 Criterion referenced evaluation is the process of evaluating (and grading) the learning of students against a set of pre-specified qualities or criteria , without reference to the achievement of others. Concerned with the performance of individual in terms of what he can do or behavior he can demonstrate without considering other’s achievement Hively and Millman ( 1974) called it Domain Referenced Test as a criterion referenced test can specifically test particular domains of learning. Examples - driving tests, marks of a student in exams, typing speed etc.
