Meaning :- The term ‘exceptional’ means different things to different people. Some use it when referring to the particularly bright children or the child with unusual talent. Others use it when they refer to any typical or deviant child. Telford and Sawyer (1972) said, “To be exceptional is to be rare of unusual”. According to Crow and Crow: “The term ‘exceptional’ is applied to a trait or to a person possessing trait up to the extent of deviation from normal possession of the trait is so great that because of it the individual warrant or receives special attentions from his fellows and his behavior responses and activities are thereby affected.” Exceptional students include children who are gifted and children who have disabilities . Children who are considered gifted are those children with superior intellectual development and who are capable of high performance and the children who are developed with low IQ level or physically , socially & emotionally disabled.
CHARACTERISTICS OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN :- It is applied to a trait of a person possessing up to the extent of deviation from normal. It is commonly applied to children who differ notable from the average children. An exceptional child deviate physically , mentally, emotionally and socially from normal growth &development. An exceptional child is he who can not be benefited from regular classroom teaching program. An exceptional child requires a modification of school practices and need special treatment in school to develop his maximum capacity. An exceptional child belongs to both the extremes of physical mentally , social, emotional and educational achievement.

GIFTED CHILDREN :- Gifted children can be any child who is naturally endowed with a high degree of general mental ability or extraordinary ability in a specific sphere of activity or knowledge & I.Q. = 130 & above. CHARACTERISTICS OF GIFTED CHILDREN :- Ability to comprehend material several grade levels above their age peers. Surprising emotional depth and sensitivity at a young age. Strong sense of curiosity. Enthusiastic about unique interests and topic. Quirky or mature sense of humor. Creative problem solving and imaginative expression. Absorb information quickly with few repetition needed.
Physically challenged children:- A physically disabled may be defined as a person’s limitation on physical functioning , mobility or stamina. Visual ( related to seeing ) Aural ( related to hearing ) Physical ( related to movement:- paralysis, stiffness, ) Language and other ( related to language, speaking( stammering,) listening( auditory processing disorder) ,reading( dyslexia) ,writing( dysgraphia) Paying attention ( ADHD – attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) . Mathematical & logical ( Dyscalculia) Motor & intellectual ( dyspraxia)
Socially challenged children:- People who are socially handicapped feel uncomfortable in social situations, or they have never learned to interact with others in appropriate ways . An example would be someone with particular forms. Example :- orphan child , transgender child. A socially handicapped children may be defined as a child whose opportunity for a healthy personality development and full unfolding of personality development and full unfolding of potentialities are hampered certain elements in his social environment such as parental inadequacy , environmental deprivation( lack of learning opportunity and emotional disturbance).
TYPES OF SOCIALLY CHALLANGED Orphan Neglected children ( Transgender ) Children of divorced or stepped parents Delinquent children( criminal minded child) Emotional imbalance Personality imbalance Backward children ( they faces many problems like :- 1. cognitive learning problem , language or speech problem, auditory perceptual problem , visual motor problems, social & emotional problems).
Intellectually emotional CHALLANGED CHILDREN :- Children with an emotional disturbance disability need help to manage their lives in and outside of the classroom. If your child is in this category or you work with children with emotional disturbances, it's important to know what this term means and the symptoms students with this disability display. TYPES : - SLOW LEARNERS MENTALLY RETAREDED
Emotionally disturbed children have an inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors. They may be unable to develop and keep appropriate, satisfactory social relationships with family, peers, and adults in the school system. They may have a tendency to display inappropriate behavior or feelings in response to normal situations. They may have a pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression. They may be inclined to develop negative physical symptoms or fears related to personal or school problems.
Diagnosis:- The category of emotional disturbance includes schizophrenia. Children with emotional disturbance may also be diagnosed with behavioral disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, emotional disturbance is not diagnosed in children who are primarily socially maladjusted unless an underlying emotional disturbance also exists. Other disorders that fall under this umbrella include anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and conduct disorders.
