Features of expository writing Thesis statement Topic Sentence Supporting Details Transitions

Thesis statement A thesis statement is a sentence that states the topic, the main idea and purpose of a writing assignment. The thesis statement has three parts: the topic , the claim and the major points . The claim is your argument that will be supported by your evidence.

Topic sentence A topic sentence is a statement that tells what your paragraph will be about. A topic sentence is different from a  thesis statement A thesis statement = main point of entire paper A topic sentence = main point of a paragraph Topic sentences act as support to the bigger thesis statement

Topic sentence continued A good topic sentence does four important things. 1. Helps you stay focused on the main idea of your paragraph. 2. Helps readers to know what your paragraph will be about, without giving EVERYTHING away. 3. Leaves a positive impression on the reader. 4. Supports the overall thesis statement.

SUPPORTING DETAILS Supporting details are statements that help explain or prove the author’s point.  For Example: Argumentative Essay : Claim: "Regular exercise is essential for maintaining good physical health." Supporting details: Statistics on the benefits of exercise, such as reduced risk of heart disease and improved mental health; examples of successful fitness programs; expert opinions from doctors or fitness trainers.

transitions Transitions refer to words, phrases, or  sentences that connect ideas, sentences, or paragraphs within a piece of writing or speech. These transitions help guide the reader or listener through the logical flow of information, indicating shifts between different thoughts, topics, or stages of argumentation.

transitions Transitions can include words like " however ," " therefore ," " in addition ," " furthermore ," and phrases like " on the other hand ," " as a result ," " in conclusion ," among others. Transitions play a crucial role in creating coherence and clarity in written and spoken communication.
