7. Idioms of Surprise 1. “Struck dumb” If someone is “struck dumb”, they’re suddenly speechless and unable to communicate because they’re so amazed, shocked, or astonished. Example : My goodness! Henry is still   struck dumb . He’d better react or the beautiful woman will ask someone else to dance. 2. “Out of the blue” It happens suddenly, it was not expected, and it is really surprising. This roller coaster ride is  knocking my socks off ! I love it! 4. “Drop a bombshell” It share unexpected news that very changes the situation. Example : She  dropped a bombshell  when she said she wouldn't run for reelection. 5. “Stop dead and your tracks” If someone or something stops you in your tracks, or if you stop dead in your tracks, you suddenly stop moving because you are very surprised, impressed, or frightened. Example :  I can hear footsteps coming from the bushes. I stopped dead in my tracks when I realized it was a bear.
