Factors Influencing Course Selection Among First-Year College Students CHAPTER IV PRESENTATION, INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA
Factors Influencing Course Selection Among First-Year College Students PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA This chapter presents the findings of the study in illustrative tables and analysis as well as the interpretation based from the treatment of data.
1. PROFILE OF THE RESPONDENTS Factors Influencing Course Selection Among First-Year College Students Age Frequency Percent 19 104 57.14 20 56 30.77 21 20 10.99 23 2 1.10 Total 182 100 1 . Profile of the Respondents Table 2.1: Frequency and percent distribution as to age
Factors Influencing Course Selection Among First-Year College Students The table shows the age distribution among the respondents and that most of the respondents are from 19 years of age with 57.14%, while the lowest are from the 23 years of age which covers 1.10%. It shows that most on first year students are 19 years old that's why they are the greatest number of respondents in our research study. This indicates that most respondents fall within the typical age range for first-year college students. Older respondents may have postponed their college experience or returned after a period away. According to the study "Factors Influencing Participation in Educational Research:
Factors Influencing Course Selection Among First-Year College Students The Role of Age and Experience" (Educational Researcher, 2015) This study looks at how student age influences their willingness to participate in academic research. Younger students, such as 19-year-olds, may be more likely to participate because they are more engaged in their academic environment, whereas older students, like 23-year-olds, may have more time constraints or different priorities that limit their involvement in research.
T able 2.2: Frequency and percent distribution as to sex Factors Influencing Course Selection Among First-Year College Students Sex Frequency Percent Male 73 40.11 Female 109 59.89 Total 182 100
Factors Influencing Course Selection Among First-Year College Students The table shows that the majority of the respondents are female with a frequency of 109 which comprise 59.89 percent. There is a higher representation of female students, which suggest increased enrollment rates among women or a greater level of engagement in the study. The presence of more female respondents than male in a research study can be attributed to various factors. One possible reason is the differences in response rates between genders. Research has shown that women tend to have higher response rates and are more willing to participate in surveys or research studies compared to men (Source: Smith, J., et al. "Gender Differences in Survey Response Rates." Public Opinion Quarterly, vol. 68, no. 1, 2004, pp. 4-17).

Factors Influencing Course Selection Among First-Year College Students The table above shows 33.52% or with a frequency of 61 of the respondents are from Criminology program while 2.75% with a total number of 5 are from BLIS and Psychology. The appeal of Criminology may stem from its perceived career opportunities or societal trends that prioritize law enforcement professions. Minimal enrollment in certain programs might indicate a lack of awareness or interest. In the study, "The Impact of Demographic Factors on the Choice of Criminology as a Career" (International Journal of Criminology, 2010) – explores how demographic factors such as age, gender, and family background influence students' decisions to pursue criminology as a career. It also touches on how first-year students (18-19 years old) may have different career motivations compared to older students who are already familiar with the field.
