Motivation Look at these family pictures: - Nuclear Family - Extended Family - Single-Parent Family Question: “What do you notice about the differences among these families?”
Definition FAMILY: A basic social institution that performs essential functions for society. HOUSEHOLD: A group of people living together, related or not. Example: - Roommates in an apartment = Household but not Family.
Functions of the Family 1. Biological / Reproductive 2. Economic Support 3. Education / Socialization 4. Emotional Support 5. Regulation of Behavior Activity: Which function is most important to you? Why?
Group Activity Sorting Task: - Cards with family roles and challenges. - Categorize them under the correct family function. - Present and explain answers. Example: - OFW Parents → Economic & Emotional functions.
Changes in Family & Household Modern Challenges: - Migration & OFW Phenomenon - Cohabitation - Same-Sex Parenting - Divorce / Separation - Children raised by grandparents Discussion: Do you know someone experiencing these changes?
Generalization Question: “Why do we say that the family is the foundation of society?” Expected Answers: - Family teaches values first. - Without families, society cannot survive.
Assessment Situation: A father works abroad to send money for his children’s education. Question: Which family functions are shown here? Answer: - Economic & Educational functions.
Assignment Interview a family member: - Ask how family roles and practices have changed from their generation to today. - Write your reflection in a short essay. This will help you connect theory with real-life experiences.
