Architecture
Gothic architecture, flourishing
from the 12th to 16th centuries,
stands as a testament to artistic
expression. Defined by its
grandeur and intricate details, this
style aimed to reach for the
heavens and bathe interiors in
light.
One of the most striking features of Gothic
buildings is the pointed arch, a stark contrast
to the rounded arches of Romanesque
architecture. This innovation allowed for
taller structures and larger windows. Stained
glass windows, a hallmark of Gothic design,
transformed sunlight into displays of color
and biblical stories.
Another key element is the ribbed vault, a
complex web of stone ribs supporting the
ceiling. Along with flying buttresses –external
arches transferring weight to the ground –it
freed up walls for even more magnificent
windows.
The architecture went beyond technical
advancements, leaning on symbolism. The emphasis
on light reflected a belief in the divine while towering
spires reached toward God. From Westminster
Abbey to Notre Dame, these architectural marvels
continue to inspire architects worldwide.
