INTERNSHIP REPORT Title: Debre Markos University ICT Center Wireless and Wired Network Installation
Introduction Background of Debre Markos university Debre Markos University (DMU) is one of the thirteen New Universities which was established in 1999 E.C by the federal democratic republic government of Ethiopia and which is found in the Northwestern part of the country at Debre Markos town. 2
Main products and services of the organization The main product of the organization, that is, Debre Markos University is the students. The main services in Debre Markos university are: Health services Café service Community services Educational services 3
DMU Information and Communication Technology Center (ICTC) The Debre Markos University Information and Communication Technology Center (ICTC) provide the primary management and support for computing and technology services within the university. The main services in DMU ICT office: multimedia promotion computer training conference room wireless broadband internet customer reception computer and office machine maintenance software development and GIS graphics design web development and system design 4
Overall organizational structure and work flow of the organization Organizational structures are: 5
Work flow of DMU ICT 6
Vision and Mission of DMU ICT Vision To be a center of innovation by providing a quality ICT services for Debre Markos University and for the Community. Mission To effectively conceive, develop, implement, utilize, and manage appropriate information systems in order to provide integrated, coordinated and customer-focused quality ICT services to Debre Markos University in line with its vision, mission and objectives . 7
The tasks that have been executed in the ICT section Some of the daily tasks we were executed in the ICT section are as follows: Computer network installation Identifying network problems Wireless Access Point configuration The way of network from DM town telecommunication to DMU using fiber optic cable Requirement gathering methodologies Observation Interview Reading existing document 8
Overall Internship Experience Objectives of the internship To give students the opportunity to interact with real world professionals in a work environment. To allow students to see connections and integrations of education between the class room theory and practice. to develop our theoretical knowledge more with practice. 9
Major challenges and problems In the first time it is difficult to communicate with the employees Lack of willingness to show the practice to us Lack of office Slow network connection No computer in the office for apparent students The organization has no well-organized document to read about the structure and workflow No well-trained employee There are more apparent students in the organization The money given to us is not enough to cover the basic needs during the last two months Power fluctuation 10
The measures taken to overcome these challenges Politeness to communicate with the employee Use internet connection before employees get to the office and after they have gone to their home We trained our practice based on the schedule We use our own computer together We use different websites We told the administrator to build enough rooms for office for the future We try to cover our expense with the help of the family 11
Overall benefits gained from the internship From the internship we have got many valuable advantages those are: Benefits of internship in terms of improving practical skill Some of the practical skills we gained from this internship program are: Performing daily activities using the plan. Self-confidentiality to do things. Problem identification. Finding the solution. Practical skill Recognizing the risk that will be occurred during job processed. 12
Cont … In terms of improving theoretical knowledge Creative and logical approach to solving problems. Clearly understand different electronic devices working principle and IP networking using different types of cables. We have gained practical knowledge of how to make a communication between computer and printer. We have gained practical knowledge of technique how to solve problems, possessing a positive attitude, honesty, motivation to work, willing to grow and learn, create great recognition for our department, strong self-confidence, professionalism, sociability and responsibility. Effective assessment and management of risk, resource & time. Aware of continued educational opportunities through such resources as academic institutions, the work place, and professional societies. we have experienced to read and understand information and ideas presented in drawings of different types of network installation interconnection and representation since drawings are the main ways of communication in the organization installation manual. 13
Cont… In terms of improving team playing skill During the internship period we recognized that team work is necessary for a given task to be accomplished early and qualitatively. After we become familiar with the team in ICT section we become their member and we freely participate in their work. In general, we can say that our team playing skill was great throughout the internship because we think our self as the student who is struggling and working hard in a class room for his/her mark and knowledge. This experience we have learned from internship period about team work will help us to improve our life to the coming semesters and after graduation. Doing in group is better than doing in individual which helps us to solve difficulties together. We have done internship reports, internship projects and sample tutorial in group. 14
Cont… In terms of improving leadership skill The internship is the sample of our future life so it teaches us how to lead each other for the coming life. This is good experience for us. Sometimes we were meeting with other students who are in the organization for internship and when we discussed about some issue of the organization we lead them how to solve some of problems in the organization. Generally, Leadership lead the organization by motivating individuals, giving feedback, managing time and building teams. We strongly recognize that leadership skills are the tool, behaviors, and capabilities that a person needs in order to be successful at motivating and directing others. Leader ship skills involves something more, the ability to help people grow in their own abilities. 15
In terms of improving entrepreneurship skills It enables us to understand the business concepts It helps us to have a long-term vision about being entrepreneur It helps us to know the opportunities and resources which we have. It helps us to know about the quality team in any industry It helps us to know about risk management In terms of improving interpersonal communication skills During the internship period we recognized that team work is necessary for a given task to be accomplished early and qualitatively. We had good communication with all the staff members from the guard up to the high-level leaders and with those students come from other university. 16
Cont… In terms of improving work ethics and organization psychology related issues From this internship we get a lot of ethical issues like how to keep punctuality and how to communicate with the staff members. Especially in DMU there are many secured materials like a server, computers to keep those as they are secured in this office the electronic device (flash, mouse, etc.) were not allowed for entrance without knowing the guards. The server room, other basic get and archive devices were much secured, so this teaches us how to obey and respect the organization rule. In order to train the ethics, we were accepting the rule. This trains us to follow ethical rules for the coming life. Ethical work conduct enables us to posses’ appropriate behaviors in our work and so as to develop proper relationships with co-workers and it helps us to create good relationships. There are two common types of ethics. 17
Project Work Network installation In our internship period we provide, wireless and cable network access for three buildings of DMU (physics laboratory, language laboratory and college of business and economics). The above three buildings of DMU have the following problems: No network accesses Due to lack of network access, the file system in the offices is manual It is difficult to share information with other offices Time consuming while sharing information with others It requires more labor work It is difficult to retrieve information 18
Methodology and Tools Methodology The methodology we use during our project works are listed below: Observation Interview Reading existing material related with the project Questionnaires Brain storming 19
Cont… Tools used for network installation Wireless access point Personal computer Twisted pair (Cat6 UTP) and fiber optics cable Cutter Puncher Female RJ45 Power over Ethernet (POE) Tester Faceplate Truncking Switch Patch panel 20

Steps to connect an office in a local area network Trucking Cable installation label the cable Open the network cabinet box Using puncher punch the wires to patch panel Connect the switch with patch panel using RJ45 cable Install wall outlets and connect it with unmanaged switch Connect the switch with computers Configure and test 24
Wireless Access Point (TP-Link) A wireless access point (WAP) is a hardware device or configured node on a local area network that allows wireless capable devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard, including Wi-Fi. It can be divided as wireless access point indoor and wireless access point outdoor. 25
Power over Ethernet (POE) Power over Ethernet (POE) is a technology that lets network cables carry electrical power. Specifying Power over Ethernet brings many advantages to an installation: Time and cost savings - by reducing the time and expense of having electrical power cabling installed. Network cables do not require a qualified electrician to fit them, and can be located anywhere. Flexibility - without being tethered to an electrical outlet, devices such as IP cameras and wireless access points can be located wherever they are needed most and repositioned easily if required. Safety - POE delivery is intelligent, and designed to protect network equipment from overload, under powering, or incorrect installation. Reliability - POE power comes from a central and universally compatible source, rather than a collection of distributed wall adapters. It can be backed-up by an uninterruptible power supply, or controlled to easily disable or reset devices. Scalability - having power available on the network means that installation and distribution of network connections is simple and effective. 26
Cont… What are the benefits of PoE? Because PoE allows you to use one cable for both power and data transmission, PoE saves your money on purchasing and running cable for networking equipment and VoIP phones. PoE makes installing or expanding a network much simpler and cheaper in buildings where it is too expensive or inconvenient to install new power lines. Using PoE lets you mount devices in places where it would be impractical to install power, such as drop ceilings. Using PoE can reduce the number of cables and electrical outlets needed in a crowded equipment room or wiring closet. Power over Ethernet(POE ) 27
Pre-Fabricated Cable Pre-Fabricated cable is simply a twisted-pair cable or copper cable in which the male Rj45 is not connected by using a crimping material. Rather the Rj45 is connected with that of the twisted-pair cable when it is fabricated . 28
Power distribution unit(PDU) A power distribution unit (PDU) is a device fitted with multiple outputs designed to distribute electric power, especially to networking equipment called TP-Link wireless access point. 29
Wireless Access Point configuration Task One : connect wireless access point with a computer using UTP cable. Task Two : configuring wireless access point with different browsers. Task Three : connect wireless access point with a switch using UTP cable. Task Four : access Wi Fi network. 30
Cont… The procedures or methods that we have used to configure TP-LINK with our intern friends were performed as follows: Power the TP-Link TL-WA901ND using the barrel jack or PoE (Power-over- Ethernet) injector, and connect a computer to the access point using an Ethernet cable (if using the PoE injector connects the LAN port to the computer which is used as a server, and the POE port to the access point). Ensure all wireless interfaces are disabled on the computer (such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) and that DHCP is enabled on the Ethernet interface. Open a web browser and access the TL-WA901ND by entering the website http://www.tplinkap.net or the IP address 10.129.9.250 into the address bar. 31
Cont… Then after log in to the system by using username admin and password admin. After the next page Click the Next button to continue, or the Exit button to quit. 32
Cont… The Quick Setup wizard will load in the browser. Click Next to start the configuration process. 33
Cont… Here the category region is not changed, since Ethiopia is not found. But the login account may or may not change as we want to do. But here we would like to change the login account for more security and click yes. 34
Cont… Then enter the old password and username that is admin, admin respectively. After that submit the new username and password. Lastly click next. 35
Cont… Here the TP-LINK is used as an access point, implies that, mark-up the point that indicates access point and click next. 36
Cont… Now this is the page that we have given the name for the wireless network and the channel to avoid the conflicting frequency of the other wireless access network since it may be nearby to the configured one. At the same time select the wireless security type which is best for laptop and android like versions. WPA2-PSK is mostly recommended. And at the last give the wireless password and click next. 37
Cont… Then change the default IP address to the static IP address and give for it the needed IP that the TP-LINK is arranged on. Here the DHCP server must be enabled, then click next. 38
General conclusions and recommendation Conclusion Generally speaking, we can say that this internship was successful by acquiring sufficient knowledge and practical skills. Here during this period (as an intern) the hosting organization satisfied with the activities of our performance spatially theoretical understanding in every moment. During the duration of internship period we have seen the real working conditions, leadership’s, management systems and their interaction as well as the weakness of the organization. And it is the way to upgrade the theoretical knowledge into practical skill. On the internship period, we have understood so many skills that was the job environment and what it meant to be a worker, why and what ethics we need to have at the work place and outside. It was also very effective in developing team playing, interpersonal and leadership skills. Generally, we get satisfactory knowledge and more benefited at internship period. This internship program is real, necessary and important to Information Technology and computer science students. The result of our observation in the two month internship period can be coinciding with the practical situation of the organization. 39
Cont… For the University(BDU) Having an internship offers a list of advantages to the students, as mentioned above, for instance it helps us to grow not only practical experience and knowledge related to our academic and career goals, but also our social skills because it is known that we will meet a lot of people and would deal with accordingly. Because of this and all the listed advantages above we recommend our university to keep giving this great chance for the students. And also, we recommend that there should be awareness creation program for organization to let them know about internship program and about different departments of the university. We think these will help students to get a lot of companies to work for in internship period and easy internship placement process. From the university side the university industrial linkage office should check the standard of the companies, and inquire if the organization could help the intern to fulfill all the objectives set out by the internship program. This will minimize the challenge of the interns. Considering the current inflations on food and others consumptions and also since more students only relay on money from the university, we think there should be some arrangement on the amount of pocket money for interns. There should be also placed in the cities where they can easily get help from their families. 40
Recommendation During our two months of internship experience period we have seen some positive and negative sides about the internship hosting organization. In this part of our report we will try to suggest some ideas for our internship hosting organization and our university. For our Internship hosting organization The internship program holds benefits to the field supervisor and hosting organization by providing motivated workers at no or relatively small cost to an organization and providing the opportunity to train possible future employees for the organization. Participating in internship program allows the field supervisor and organization to maintain a working relationship with the university in which we are enrolled. Therefore, we suggest that, the organization should host more intern students in the future for the common good of the student and its organization. When we go to DMU ICT, they are willing to host us but there are not enough resources. So, before a organization is willing to accept the intern students, it is important to consider the materials required for the interns. Companies expect the trainer as specialized on the work but the program is upgrading the trainer’s theoretical as well as practical skill. For DMU ICT we recommend that it is important to consider the interns are not professionals rather we are students. 41
Recommendation For the student They have to be participated actively Do their task according to the work ethics of the organization He or she has to be ready to know more both practically and theoretically 42
