SEARCH ENGINES Definition: Tools that help find information across multiple sources (journals, articles, books, etc.). They do not store full-text data but direct users to relevant sources. Function: Searches multiple databases, journals, and websites for medical and dental literature. Examples: PubMed ( pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov ) – Searches MEDLINE and other biomedical literature. Google Scholar ( scholar.google.com ) – Searches academic articles across disciplines. Scopus ( www.scopus.com ) – Indexes peer-reviewed scientific literature. Web of Science ( www.webofscience.com ) – Tracks citations in research publications. ✔ Key Feature: Works like Google but for academic/medical content; provides links to articles from various databases.

DATABASES Definition: Structured collections of medical and dental research articles, clinical trials, case studies, and patient data. They store full-text articles, abstracts, and metadata. Function: Stores, organizes, and allows direct access to medical and dental studies. Examples: MEDLINE – Contains journal articles in medicine and dentistry (accessible via PubMed). Cochrane Library ( www.cochranelibrary.com ) – Systematic reviews and clinical trials. ClinicalTrials.gov ( clinicaltrials.gov ) – Repository of clinical trial information. WHO Global Health Observatory ( www.who.int/data/gho ) – Global health data and statistics ✔ Key Feature: Provides structured access to scientific data and research publications.

WEBSITES Definition: Online platforms providing medical and dental information, guidelines, or public health updates. Function: Offers official recommendations, research summaries, or health-related news. Examples: World Health Organization (WHO) ( www.who.int ) – Global health policies and research. American Dental Association (ADA) ( www.ada.org ) – Guidelines for dental professionals. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ( www.cdc.gov ) – Public health and disease prevention National Institutes of Health (NIH) ( www.nih.gov ) – Medical and dental research. ✔ Key Feature: Provides information but does not function as a research search engine or structured database.
