Florence Nightingale was a legend in her lifetime and was one of the greatest pioneer's in nursing.
She lived ninety years and accomplished many great things for the field of nursing. Her descriptions
of nursing, health, environment, and humankind are remarkable and still true to this day.
Nightingale reformed nursing and changed the way nursing was viewed. Some of the issues during
Nightingale's time, the 1800's, we still face today. Nightingale not only impacted nursing in the
1800's, but also still has an effect on nursing today. We do not need a new role model and icon for

At first, her parents refused to let her become a nurse because they said it was unsuitable for a
woman of her education, but they eventually ceded. Nightingale went to Kiaserswerth and sustained
a three–month training program. She later went on to be a nurse in the Crimean War where she began
her reformation of the nursing profession (Holliday and Parker, 1997). Selanders (1998) explains
how Nightingale describes nursing, environment, humankind, and health. Selanders begins with
nursing; giving an explanation why nursing is a calling, an art, a science, requires education, and
achieved in the course of environmental alteration. When stating that nursing is a calling,
Nightingale emphasized nursing should be practiced for the love of the profession and not for the
money. Nursing was reviewed as an art and a science. The science of nursing refers to practicing
nursing with current methods, knowledge, and education. The art of nursing refers to being
practiced with empathy. Nightingale explained why nursing needs environmental alteration. Nurses
must receive abstract and clinical practice when receiving education to become a nurse so that a
patient can be put within the best environment and care possible (Selanders). Next, Nightingale

Florence Nightingale is remembered throughout the world for her heroic, almost superhuman labors
in the field of nursing. Florence Nightingale was born in Italy in 1820 and was named Florence after
her birthplace. A brilliant child, Florence attained outstanding academic achievement in her years
attending school. Florence grew up to be a lively and attractive young woman, admired in her
families elite social circle and was expected to make a good marriage, but Florence had other

and moved to a hospital in London.
In 1854 Britain, France and Turkey declared war on Russia, marking the begging of the Crimean
War. The allies had the upper hand in the war but there were vast criticisms of the medical felicities
for the wounded soldiers.
In response, Florence asked and was granted permission to take a group of thirty–eight women
nurses to look after the British soldiers fighting in the war.
Nightingale found the conditions of the hospitals appalling. The men were kept in rooms without
blankets or decent food. Unwashed, they were still wearing their army uniforms, "still
with dirt and gore". In these conditions, Florence was not surprised that war wounds
accounted for one out of every six deaths in the war. Diseases such at typhus, chorea, and dysentery
ran rampant among the wounded soldiers.
Military officers and doctors objected to Nightingale's view of reforming military hospitals. They
interpreted her comments as an attack and she was made to feel unwelcome. Nightingale received
very little help from the military until she used a contact from the London Times to report the

However, the death rates were getting high in most of the highest hospitals of the regions. At the
time of her first winter at Scutari, there were 4,077 soldiers died, in which most of the soldiers
died from sicknesses like dysentery, cholera, typhoid, and typhus, instead of wounds got by battle.
In March 1855, Sanitary Commission had to be sent out by the British government to Scutari, by
watching lack of ventilation and overloading defective sewers. This step was taken after the six
months of Florence arrival. This commission improved ventilation and flushed out the sewers.
Undoubtedly, the death rates greatly declined but she never claimed hygiene as a cause of death
and the reason to reduce the rate of death. After the arrival to Britain, Florence started gathering
evidences before the health of Army. Florence also believed that many of the soldiers were kill by
poor living conditions at the hospital. This drastic experience becomes the reason of great influence
throughout her career.
Conclusion The whole historical study of Florence Nightingale is the tremendous example for
learning about human service profession. It reflects how a lady takes different initiatives and
wanted to go in the depth of the cause. She still conceived that the reason of death rate was due to

plan. Nightingale was devoted to the welfare of the soldiers and attended to all their needs, physical,
social as well as emotional. She worked long hours, sometimes twenty–four hours straight without
rest. Late at night she often made her rounds, carrying a Turkish lamp. The soldiers came to call
her “the lady with the lamp”. To this day the lamp is the symbol for nursing. As a
