DEFINITION “Adulteration is defined as the process by the quality or the nature of a given substance is reduced through the addition of a foreign or an inferior substance and the removal of vital elements “. “It is a defined as the act of lowering the quality and nature of food either by the addition are substitution of inferior substance or bye the removal some valuable ingredients “. 2/14/2025 Food Adulteration Act 7

TEST FOR THE DETECTION OF ADULTERANTS PRESENT IN FOOD 1) SUBSTANCE :- sugar ADULTERANTS :- chalk powder TEST :- dissolves in the glass of water, chalk will be settle down in the bottom . 2/14/2025 Food Adulteration Act 8

2) SUBSTANCE :-milk ADULTERANTS :-water TEST :- put a drop of milk on a polished vertical surface and allow to flow poor milk flows living a white trail . 2/14/2025 Food Adulteration Act 9

1. PREVENTION OF FOOD ADULTERATION ACT(1954) A government of India passed the prevention of food adulteration act in 1954(PFA-1954) to abolish food adulteration .It came into action from June 1,1955. OBJECTIVES:- To provide pure and wholesome food to the consumers . To prevent sale of substandard foods. To protect the interest of the consumers by eliminating fraudulent practice. 2/14/2025 Food Adulteration Act 12

2.FOOD STANDARDS CODEX ALIMENTARIUS : The Codex Alimentarius commission , which is the principal organ of the joint FAO/WHO Food Standards program formulates food standard for International market . 2/14/2025 Food Adulteration Act 13

PFA STANDARDS : Under the prevention of food adulteration act (1954) standards have been established which are the revised from the time to time by the “central committee for Food Standards .” BUREAU OF INDIA STANDARSDS : The ISI mark on any article of food is a guarantee of good quality in accordance with the standards prescribed by the Bureau India standards for that commodity. 2/14/2025 Food Adulteration Act 14

CONCLUSION Food adulteration is the process of adding chemical substances with foods ,which should not be contained within food and beverages.
