FORGETTING A.P.GIRI
Meaning Educational psychology, forgetting is a fundamental concept that refers to the loss or failure to retrieve previously learned information from memory. The first ever significant study of phenomenon of forgetting was made by Ebbinghaus He was a German psychologist His monograph named “ Memory”revealed briliant facts about remembering and forgetting .
CAUSES OF FORGETTING
FADING MEMORY TRACES Refers to the gradual weakening or decay of memories over time. Examples Imagine you learned a new language during a summer vacation, and you became fairly proficient in it by the end of the summer. Your memory of the language is a memory trace that was strong at the end of your vacation because you practiced it regularly. However, as months go by without using the language, you notice that you start to forget some of the vocabulary and grammar rules you once knew so well. This weakening of your memory of the language is an example of fading memory traces.
LAPSE OF TIME
LACK OF INTEREST Forced learning whenever there is lack of interest in learning certain activity or material. If a child has no interest in learning mathematics and he is forced to learn it ,je will soon forget than to remember it
RETROACTIVE INHIBITION Retroactive inhibition is a psychological phenomenon that occurs when newly learned information interferes with the recall of previously learned information. In simpler terms, it’s when something you’ve recently learned makes it harder to remember something you learned earlier. Example Imagine you are studying for two different subjects, History and Geography, one after the other. You spend some time studying History and then switch to Geography. While studying Geography, you find that some of the information you learned in History is getting mixed up with the Geography facts. You may have trouble recalling specific historical dates because the new Geography information is interfering with your ability to remember them.
EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCE Strong emotional disturbance results in developing fear, nervous or excitement may block past experience.
