FORMULATING LEARNING OBJECTIVES IN A HEALTH TEACHING PLAN

Learning outcomes At the end of the lesson the students will be able to: Define what is a learning objective in a health teaching plan. Enumerate the importance and purpose of a learning objective in a health teaching plan. List common mistakes in writing learning objective. Identify the 3 important characteristics in writing a good learning objective. Construct a good learning objective in a health teaching plan.

Learning OBJECTIVE? statement of specific and short-term behavior that must be achieved first before a goal in reached. refers to specific desired learning or behavioral attributes that must be shown at the end of the session. it is the intended result of instruction and describe what the learner is expected to do at the end of a learning situation. must be action-oriented rather than content-oriented and learner-centered rather than teacher-centered. acts as a guide or compass of the educator in planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching and learning outcomes.

Importance of Learning OBJECTIVE? 1.Helps to keep educator’s thinking on target and learner centered. 2.Communicates to others, both learners and healthcare team members what is planned for teaching and learning. 3.Helps learners understand what is expected of them to keep track of their progress. 4.Forces the educator to organize educational materials so as not to get lost in content and forget the learner’s role in the process. 5.Encourages educators to question their own motives – to think deliberately about why they do such things and analyze what positive results will be attained from accomplishing specific objectives.

Importance of Learning OBJECTIVE? 6.Tailor’s teaching to the learner’s particular circumstances and needs. 7.Creates guide spot for teacher evaluation and documentation of success or failure. 8.Focuses attention not on what is taught but on what the learner will come away. 9.Orients both educator and learner to the specific end result of instruction. 10.Make it easier for the learner to visualize performing the required actions.

Common mistakes in writing Learning OBJECTIVE? 1.Describe what the educator rather than the learner is expected to do. 2.Includes more than one expected behavior in a single objective (avoid using the compound and to connect two verbs – the learner will select and prepare). 3.Forgot to include all 3 components of condition, performance and criterion. 4.Use terms for performance that are subject to many interpretations, not-action oriented, and difficult to measure.

Common mistakes in writing Learning OBJECTIVE? 5.Writes an objective that is unattainable given to the ability of the learner. 6.Writes objectives that do not relate to the stated goal. 7.Clutters an objective by including unnecessary pieces of information. 8.Too general so as not to clearly specify the expected outcome.

Terms with Many Interpretation (Not Recommended) Terms with Few Interpretation (Recommended) To know To understand To appreciate To realize To be familiar with To enjoy To value To be interested in To feel To think To learn To apply To choose To classify To compare To contrast To construct To determine To describe To demonstrate To differentiate To distinguish To explain To identify To list To order To predict To recall To recognize To select To state To verbalize To write

3 Important Characteristics in Writing Learning Objectives 1.Condition – describes the testing situation or constraints under which the behavior will be observed or the performance is expected to occur. Under what conditions should the learner be able to do it? Example: Without using a calculator, After the discussion, After watching video

3 Important Characteristics in Writing Learning Objectives 2.Performance – describes what the learner is expected to be able to do or perform/to demonstrate that serves as evidence that objectives have been met. What should the learner be able to do? Example: write, list, identify, solve, select, recall

3 Important Characteristics in Writing Learning Objectives 3.Criterion – describes how well or with what accuracy the learner must be able to perform for the behavior considered to be acceptable; the standard, quality, accuracy, level, or amount of performance defined as satisfactorily demonstrating mastery. How well must the learner be able to do it? Example: 5 out of six, correct and accurate procedure, 100%

Samples of Well-Written Learning Objectives 1. Following a 20-minute teaching session on hypoglycemia (CONDITION), Mrs. Smith will be able to identify (PERFORMANCE) 3 out of 4 major symptoms of low blood sugar (CRITERION). 2. After watching a demonstration on hand washing (CONDITION), the students will be able to correctly perform handwashing (PERFORMANCE) according to checklist standards(CRITERION). 3. On completing the reading materials on proper bathing for newborn (CONDITION), the mother will be able to perform the steps of newborn bath (PERFORMANCE) systematically and accurately (CRITERION).

EVALUATION Carefully read each question and answer it to the best of your ability. In your own words, what is a learning objective? (2pts.) 2. Enumerate at least 2 importance of learning objective in your own words. (2pts. each) 3. List at least 2 common mistakes in writing a learning objective in your own words. (2pts. Each)

EVALUATION II. Read the learning objectives provided below and identify the underlined statements based on the three key essential characteristics of a good learning objective. After a 15-minute lecture on the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy the pregnant women will be able to list at least five key nutrients essential for a healthy pregnancy Following a hands-on practice session on intramuscular injections the nursing students will be able to demonstrate the correct injection technique with no errors according to the skill checklist After participating in a group discussion on stress management techniques, the participants will be able to describe three effective methods to reduce stress in daily life. Following a video tutorial on CPR (CONDITION), the learners will be able to perform the basic steps of adult CPR according to the American Heart Association guidelines After reviewing a pamphlet on food safety practices, the caregiver will be able to identify at least three common causes of foodborne illnesses.

EVALUATION III. Using the three essential characteristics of a good learning objective, construct at least five clear and measurable learning objectives. (3pts. each) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
