Introduction:
In USPXVIII, creams are defined as
●“semisolid emulsion of either oil in water or water in oil type.”
●“semisolid emulsions are usually medicated,intentedfor
external application.”
Types Of Skin Care Creams:
●According to emulsion types:
1.Water in oil emulsion. Eg: Cold Creams.
2. Oil in water emulsion. Eg: Vanishing Creams.
Cold cream:
●Cold cream is an emulsion in which is a oil-based semisolid preparation.
●When it is applied to the skin a cooling effect is produced due to the slow
evaporation of the water contained in the emulsion.
●It is a soothing and cleansing cosmetic typically of oily and heavy consistency.
●Cold cream is an example of a Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion.
Uses of cold cream:
1.Medicated cold cream is mainly used as a topical pharmaceutical dosage form
for the treatment of skin.
2.Helps to maintain the skin’s moisture balance and avoid rough skin conditions
3.As cleansing preparation to remove make-up.
4.To provide an emollient effect.
Ideal Characteristics of Cold Cream
●The cold cream's pH should ideally range from 4.6 to 6.0.
●It should have the ideal consistency to allow for easy application and removal
from the container.
●Following external application, the skin should experience a cooling effect.
●To prevent water from evaporating from the skin's surface, it must create a
thin, waxy protective coating on the skin.
●Should have a quicker emollient action so that extremely dry skin can quickly
expand and soften.
Formulation of cold cream:-
Preparation:-
●There are other formulations also like, USP Formula, Beeswax-Borax type
Traditional Formula.
● the procedure of preparation is almost same in all the formulations.
❑Firstly the oil phase and aqueous phase are prepared separately.
❑Then both are poured into a container with continuous stirring either
clockwise or anti-clockwise until it has cooled to certain temperature.
❑Homogenizationof the cream by a homogenizer andcongealing.
❑Filling, labeling, and packaging.
Role of ingredients
Beeswax :
•It serves as an emollient (skin softening)
•Beeswax as anti inflammatory. antiviral, and antibacterial properties.
•Beeswax also has therapeutic properties and is a strong source of vitamin A,
Liquid Paraffin:
•Liquid paraffin, a mineral oil that is essential for skin care since it keeps the
skin moisturised.
•It serves as a barrier to the skin, preventing moisture loss.
Borax:
•keeps the preparation’s pH stable and inhibits bacterial development.
•It is used as emulsifying agent.
•Borax's alkaline nature makes it the ideal ingredient in cleaner products
VANISHING CREAM
●Vanishing cream gets the name from the fact that it leaves no trace when
rubbed into skin.
●These are oil in water type of emulsions.
●After application, the continuous phase evaporates,
leaving behind the thin residue film of the stearic acid.
Uses :
▪Used as adhesive for makeup powders.
▪Reduces loss of moisture from dry skin.
▪Smoothens the skin and keeps it soft.
▪Prevents skin from roughening and chapping
Formulation:
●Stearic acid: Emulsifier,Emollient, Lubricant,Softens the skin and prevents
products from separating.
●Potassium hydroxide: Stabiliser of pH in product.
●Cetyl alcohol : Helps prevent creams from
separating into oil and liquid, as a moisturizer.
●Butylated hydroxytoluene:As an antioxidant.
●Methylparaben: As a preservative.
●Gleycerin: As a humectant.
Preparation of vanishing cream:
1)Preparation of natural extracts:
Fruits of muskmelon and cucumber were extracted using muslin cloth.
2) Preparation of oil phase:
Stearic acid, cetylalcohol, butylated hydroxytoluene was taken intooneporcelain
dish and this mixture was melted at 70°C.
3) Preparation of aqueous phase:
Potassium hydroxide, glycerine, waterwas taken into another porcelain dish and
heated this mixture at 70°C.
4) Addition of aqueous phase to oil phase:
The aqueous phase along with extracts of muskmelon, cucumber, and aloe vera
was added gradually to the oil phase at 70°C with continuous stirring. The
prepared cream was transferred and allowed to cool. Perfume (q. s) was added at
last and the formulated cream was transferred to suitable container.
