LEARNERS DIVERSITY: The community and HomE Environment LEARNING EPISODE 4

TARGET: Your Intended Learning Outcome At the end of this Episode, I must be able to: Describe the influencing factors in the home environment that affect the student’ learning. Seek advice concerning strategies that build relationships with parents/guardians and the wider community (6.2.1); and Identify effective strategies on how teacher can work together with the family.

1. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model 2. Baumrind’s Parenting Styles

1. BIO - ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS THEORY The varied system of the environment and the interrelationship among the Systems shape child’s development. Both environment and biology influence the child’s development. Environment affects child and the child influences the environment. It is organized into a series of five nested Systems or level. The five main elements are the microsystem , mesosystem , exosystem , macrosystem , And Chronosystem .

MICROSYSTEM The microsystem is the innermost level, composed of an individual immediate environment. It includes the people the person interacts with daily, including their family, friends, classmates, teachers, and others.

MESOSYSTEM The mesosystem is the next level of the model, comprised of all the relationship and interactions between microsystem. Example of mesosystems in A child’s life include the interaction between their family and school Or between their friends and family.

EXOSYSTEM This refers to environment in which the individual is not an active participants but still impacts development. This level encompasses the social context in which a person lives and other aspects of the environment, including government policies, social services, community resources, and mass media.

MACROSYSTEM The macrosystem involves the broader society and cultural forces that contribute to individual development.

CHRONOSYSTEM The chronosystem is the outermost level of the model, accounting for the role that time plays in influencing individual development. This includes personal experiences that occur over the course of life, the various life transitions that people experience, historical events, and societal changes.

2. BAUMRIND’S PARENTING STYLES Authoritarian – Parenting are very firm with their children and expect unwavering and unquestioning obedience. Rules are set by parents and misbehavior is met with withdrawal of affection, physical punishment or threats

Permissive – Parenting are not firm or controlling. They have few expectations. May be warn and caring but appear to be uninvolved and uninterested.

Rejecting-Neglecting – Parents are disengaged from children. Neither demanding nor responsive to children. Provide no structure, supervision, support or guidance

Authoritative – Parents achieve a good blend. They are firm yet loving. Have clear and reasonable expectations and limits for their children. Treat children with respect and warmth. Make children understand consequence of their behavior.

ANALYZE From your home visit and interview, what do you think is the style of parenting experienced by the Learner? Explain your answer. Relating you data with what you learned from the child development, what family factors do you think contribute to the development and over-all adjustment of the learner in school? Does the communication between the home-school have an effect on the learner? If yes, what are this effect? How can the teacher partner with the community to contribute to the development and learning of the students? Who are the people or which institutions can be the teacher tap to seek advice regarding the development and learning of students?

REFLECT Reflect on your own development as a child. What type of parenting did you experience? How did it affect you? As a future teacher, how would you established good home-school collaboration? How can you work well the parents? How can you help them? How can they help you?

THANK YOU! 😊
