FUTURE FORMS FUTURE SIMPLE (WILL FUTURE) BE GOING TO

Read the sentences and answer the questions. I am going to fly to Paris next Monday. I have already bought my ticket and booked my room. We ’ ll definitely have a great time at the party. Look at those grey clouds. It ’ s going to rain. I feel hungry. I ’ ll make a sandwich. Which one is a prediction based on opinion? Which one is a future plan? Which one is a prediction based on evidence? Which one is a spontaneous decision?

Read the sentences and answer the questions. The train leaves at 12:15 every day. Hurry! It ’ s 12:12, the train’s gonna leave any minute! I ’ m going to take the train to visit my grandmother. I ’ m taking the train to visit my grandmother. Which one is a future plan? Which one is a timetable ? Which one is a prediction based on evidence?

What about degree of certainty of predictions ? How sure are you that there will be a World War in the next 50 years? Certainly, definitely, sure (100%) Probably (75%) Possibly, Might (50% or less) Don ’ t forget you can use these with positive AND negative forms: There definitely won ’ t be war. I ’ m sure that there will be war. North Korea is probably going to start it.

So basically, We use ‘ will/won ’ t ’ + V1 for spontaneous decisions predictions based on opinio n We use ‘ be + (not) going to + V1 for evidence based predictions planned future events We also use present continuous for planned future events. We can express the degree of certainty of a prediction Now, let ’ s look at some examples!

SPONTANEOUS DECISION A: The phone is ringing. B: Ok, I ’ ll get it.

SPONTANEOUS DECISION A: I ’ m so thirsty! B: I ’ ll bring you some water.

SPONTANEOUS DECISION A: This bag is too heavy for m e to carry. B: I ’ ll help you.

Future predictions based on opinion: A: There is a BJK–Kasımpaşa match on Saturday. (tımetable = present simple!) B: Beşiktaş will definitely win.

Future predictions based on opinion: A: Computers are getting more and more complex every year. B: I think computers will control the world one day.

Future predictions based on opinion: A: What will happen to the world in the next fifty years? B: I think there will probably be a Third World War and millions of people will die because of it.

Future predictions based on evidence: A: Look at Mr. Fox carrying a bucket of paint and brushes! B: He is going to paint his walls.

Future predictions based on evidence: A: He ’ s drunk and driving really fast! B: He is going to have an accident.

Future predictions based on evidence: A: I ’ ve forgotten to turn off the faucet ! B: It ’ s going to flood your flat. You should go home, right now!

Planned future: A: Do you have any plans for the holiday? B: Yes, I am going to visit my family in Izmir. (B: Yes, I ’ m visiting my family in Izmir.)

Planned future: A: What are you doing tomorrow? B: I am going to see my dentist. I have an appointment for 4 o ’ clock.

Planned future: A: What are you doing Thursday morning? B: I ’ m taking a quiz at school.

Some extra functions of «will» Will may also indicate: 1. promise: I will always love you! I won ’ t tell anyone, you can trust me. 2. request/offer: Will you marry me? We ’ re having dinner with the Smiths tonight. Will you join us?

Future Continuous : Just like Present and Past Continuous , it tells what is happening at a specific time. At 8pm Sunday night I was watching the football match. ( S + was/were + Ving ) Right now, we are studying grammar. ( S + am/is/are + Ving ) Tonight at midnight, I hope I will be sleeping ! (S + will be + Ving )

This time next week, we will be eating lunch on the plane. This time tomorrow, I will be skiing. At six o’clock tonight, we will be flying to London.

Future Continuous: (keywords: AT/IN/ON) What will you be doing at these times? At this time tomorrow , At 10pm tonight , On this day in 1923, In ten years ’ time , “ In 10 years , I will probably be working. ” “ I hope I won ’ t be taking summer school in July! ”

Future Perfect: Just like with Present and Past perfect , it tells what happens / finishes before a certain time. When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul had already gone home. ( S + had + V3 ) They have been married for 10 years. ( S + have/has + V3 ) By summer, we will have taken the proficiency exam. ( S + will have + V3 )

By the time we get there, the film will have started. ( This means that when we get there, we will be able to say: “The film has started .”) The builder says he will have finished the roof by Saturday. ( So Saturday at the latest, maybe before .) The car will have done 100,000 miles in two weeks’ time.

Future Perfect: (keyword: BY) What will you (or people you know) have finished/accomplished by these times? By 1pm , By the end of the week , By the summer , By 2020 , By this time next year, “ My brother will have graduated high school by the summer. ” “ I ’ m sure I will have married my dream girl by 2020 . ”

Before + Simple Present, Future Perfect Before she comes home, her husband will have finished prepearing dinner. The train will have left before we get to the station.

By the time + Simple Present, Future Perfect By the time she comes back, I will have finished my H.W. We will have started watching the film by the time you leave the office.

Future Perfect Continuous: Just like with Present and Past perfect continuous, it shows how long something has gone on at a certain time. When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul had been drinking for two hours. ( S + had been + Ving ) They have been planning their wedding for 8 months. ( S + have/has been + Ving ) By the time the pizza comes, we will have been studying for 3 hours. ( S + will have been + Ving )

Next year, Alice will have been teaching for 10 years. By her fifth birthday, she will have been staying in the same house for 40 years.

Future Perfect Continuous : ( keyword BY, and HOW LONG?) What will you (or people you know) have been doing (and for how long) by these times? By 2 am , By the end of the week , By the summer , By 2020 , “ I will have been sleeping for two hours by 2 am. ” ( and it will still be continu ing , not finished! ) “ By 2020 I hope I will have been living abroad for at least five years. ”
