Distinguishing Text- Types According to Purpose and Features: Classification (EN5RC-IIc-3.2.1)

TEXT STRUCTURE Text structure refers to the way an author arranges information in his writing. Text structure enables authors to organize their thoughts as they write.

CLASSIFICATION TEXT also known as text tagging or text categorization, is the process of categorizing text into organized groups. In this type of text, items or ideas are sorted according to commonalities.

CLASSIFICATION TEXT Readers can recognize classification text through signal words such as: first, finally, to begin, next, in addition, on the other hand, for example, or then.

CLASSIFICATION TEXT Also, in this type of text, the writer presents the overall idea then splits it into parts to provide clarity and description.

ATHLETES FOOT TINEA PEDIS, or ATHLETES FOOT, is a very common fungal skin infection of the foot. It often first appears between toes. It can be a one- time occurrence or it can be chronic. LET’S READ!

ATHLETES FOOT The fungus, known as Trichophyton, thrives under warm, damp conditions so people whose feet sweat a great deal are more susceptible. LET’S READ!

ATHLETES FOOT It is easily transmitted in showers and pool walkways. Those people with immunosuppressive conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, are also more susceptible to athlete’s foot. LET’S READ!

What specialty that this image relates to? A. Nephrology B. Podiatry

B. PODIATRY Looking to the paragraph, you would really think that it is podiatry because there is a word foot, there is something to do with fungal infection and skin infection. Aside from that Nephrology is the study of kidney. Therefore, podiatry is the correct answer.

B. PODIATRY Now, think about how you made that decision. Did you use the word Podiatry anywhere? It is not there in text. Then how did you know that this is podiatry?

CLASSIFICATION TEXT There are several steps to be followed in the process of developing a written piece that follows a classification text structure:

CLASSIFICATION TEXT 1. Decide on a main topic. 2. Divide the main topic into two or more subtopics.

CLASSIFICATION TEXT 3. For each subtopic, provide information and details to clarify and explain, or divide each subtopic further by creating categories for each subtopic.

CLASSIFICATION TEXT 4. If categories have been developed, provide information and details to clarify and explain each category.

Example of Classification Text Structure:

ACTIVITY 1 Directions : Divide the illustration into 3 categories about the types of social media.

ASSESSMENT First, clean the clay by getting rid of the bits of sand and dirt from it. Then, add or remove water from the clay if necessary. If the clay is too wet, it will not hold a shape. And if it’s too dry, it will not be flexible enough to mold. How to Mold a Sculpture

ASSESSMENT Next, begin to shape the clay into something- with your bare hands or with tools. Roll and push the clay into shapes or pull off and stick back in different places. After the clay has been molded, put into a kind of oven to be fired. How to Mold a Sculpture

ASSESSMENT Then, build a fire. As the fire slowly gets hotter and hotter, water is baked out of the clay. Sooner or later, the clay dries up and becomes hard with a new shape. Remove it from the oven and let it cool. How to Mold a Sculpture

ASSESSMENT Afterward, you may paint it or put some designs of your choice on it. How to Mold a Sculpture ANSWER :
