Chapter 1 Chapter 1 Cells & Organisms

1.1 Characteristics of living organisms What is Biology? Study of organisms From where the biology word come from? came from greek word Bios means life logos means knowledge What we call the scientist who study about living things? Biologist

What questions do the scientist seek answer for? What is life ? What is the difference between living things and non-living things How many types of living things exist in the world? How do these living things exist?

Living organisms shows 7 main characteristics Just remember my name — MRS GREN — and you’ll never forget what makes something alive!

Movement What is movement? Moving parts of body or the whole organisms Change in place

Respiration What is Respiration? Breakdown of glucose to produce energy for the body to carry out other metabolic processes.

Sensitivity What is sensitivity? Ability to detect the stimulus and make an appropriate response. The touch-me-not plant closes when touched. The body shivers when it is cold

Growth What is growth? A permanent increase in size or dry mass. The diagram illustrates the growth of the cell .

Reproduction What is reproduction? Organisms able to make a new offspring of the same species as themselves.

Excretion What is excretion? Removal of waste products from the body.

Nutrition What is nutrition? Organisms take in substance from the environment and use them to provide energy or materials to make new cells.
