Order of precedence of these awards is the Param Vir Chakra, the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti Chakra, the Vir Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra.
Gallantry Awards have been instituted by the Government of India to honor the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the officers/personnel of the Armed Forces, other lawfully constituted Forces and civilians. These gallantry awards are announced twice in a year - first on the occasion of the Republic Day and then on the occasion of the Independence Day.

INTRODUCTION REPUBLIC DAY INDEPENDENCE DAY Gallantry Awards have been instituted by the Government of India to honor the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the officers/personnel of the Armed Forces, other lawfully constituted Forces and civilians. These gallantry awards are announced twice in a year - first on the occasion of the Republic Day and then on the occasion of the Independence Day. Order of precedence of these awards is the Param Vir Chakra, the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti Chakra, the Vir Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra. Gallantry Awards are classified into two Categories Gallantry in the Face of Enemy Gallantry Other than in the Face of Enemy
The Param Vir Chakra is India 's highest military decoration , awarded for displaying distinguished acts of valour during wartime. Param Vir Chakra translates as the "Wheel of the Ultimate Brave", and the award is granted for "most conspicuous bravery in the presence of the enemy". As of now , the medal has been awarded 21 times. Of the 21 awardees, 20 have been from the Indian Army , and one has been from the Indian Air Force . Gallantry in the Face of Enemy MAHA VIR CHAKRA Front and back view of Maha Vir Chakra The Maha Vir Chakra is the second highest military decoration in India , after the Param Vir Chakra. It is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air. It replaced the British Distinguished Service Order (DSO). As of now, it has been given 219 times. Wing Commander Jagmohan Nath was the first recipient. .
Gallantry in the Face of Enemy VIR CHAKRA Front and back view of Vir Chakra Vir Chakra is an Indian wartime military bravery award presented for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy on the battlefield. It is third in precedence in wartime gallantry awards and comes after the Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra . As of now, it has been given 1322 times Captain TGI pai, Lt Col Vikram Dusker and Major Tirth Singh Oberoi were some of the earliest recipients of this award.
ASHOK CHAKRA Front and back view of Ashok Vir Chakra The Ashoka Chakra is India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra , and is awarded for the "most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice”. The decoration may be awarded either to military or civilian. As of now it has been awarded 86 times. Naik Narbahadur Thapa , Havildar Bachittar Singh and Flight Lieutenant Suhas Biswas were the first recipients of this award. Gallantry other than in the Face of Enemy
KIRTI CHAKRA Front and back view of Param Vir Chakra Gallantry other than in the Face of Enemy The Kirti Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the field of battle. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, including posthumous awards. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Maha Vir Chakra . It is second in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards, comes after Ashoka Chakra and before Shaurya Chakra . Before 1967, the award was known as the Ashoka Chakra, Class II. As of now it has been awarded 496 times.
SHAURYA CHAKRA Front view of Param Vir Chakra Gallantry other than in the Face of Enemy The Shaurya Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice while not engaged in direct action with the enemy. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, sometimes posthumously. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and comes after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra . As of now it has been awarded 2014 times. Major PS Gahoon, Second Lieutenant M Thulasira, Subedar Kartar Singh are some of the first recipient of this award.
