Garden Operations Activities while laying or making a garden. For making a garden ,planning of garden is a must.

Planning a Garden The main steps in planning a garden include: Choosing the site Selecting the plants to be grown. Sketching a garden plan & Analysing the soil

Choosing the site A well drained area should be chosen. It should be level or gently sloping. The garden site should also receive proper amount of light for the plants to grow well.

Selecting the plants to be grown. Select the best kind of plants. Plants differ on the basis of life they live. Easy to grow and suitable for the climate of that particular region. Source:Google Images

Sketching a garden plan On paper sketching a garden plan can avoid mistakes in planting. It can help one save space also. Different vegetables, fruits etc have different harvesting time, they can be replaced by others.

Analysing the soil Soil is generally classified on the basis of major components as: Sandy Soil Clayey Soil & Loamy Soil Alluvial Soil

Sandy Soil Sandy soil is light and porous. Easy to handle. Provides good aeration. Low water holding capacity and dries rapidly. Is improved by mixing it with suitable proportion of clay and loam.

Clayey Soil Clayey soil is generally black & heavy. It has drawback is it becomes hard during hot season and and makes spreading of roots difficult. Soil containing more than 35%of clay is unsuitable for growing plants.

Loamy Soil It is a mixture of sand, silt and clay. Good for making a garden. Depending upon the proportion of sand and clay is termed sandy, clayey or loamy.

Alluvial Soil Alluvial soil is sediment of rivers and streams. It is rich in humus (decomposed organic matter). It is good for ferns and palms. Besides there are peaty, gravellyor rocky soil and many more.
