Education in Odisha is witnessing a rapid transformation. Odisha has faired reasonably well in terms of literacy rate. The overall literacy rate according to census 2011 is 72.87 % which is marginally behind the national average of 74.04%. There has been an increase 9.8% in the literacy rate during the last decade. The rural/urban distribution of literacy rates reveal that increase was higher in rural areas than in urban areas .The faster growth of female ,S.C &S.T literacy in Odisha during the decades were instrumental in the impressive rise of overall literacy rate in the state. Education in Odisha.

The number of teachers in primary schools in Odisha in 2017-18 is 175725 as against 16520 in 1947-48. Similarly, in upper primary schools, the number of teachers in 2017-18 is 108739 as against 1483 in 1947-48. The State aims at providing primary schools within 1 km and upper primary schools within 3 kms of habitation having population of more than 300 and 500 respectively.

During 2000-01 dropout rate in primary level was 41.80% which has significantly declined to 5.81 in 2017-18.Accordingly dropout rate for Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe has decreased from 52.4 & 64.1 during 2000-01 at primary level to 3.75 and 9.35 respectively during 2017-18.The upper primary drop out rate for all category has also declined from 57% during 2000-01 to 5.45 % during 2017-18.
