Initial lesion

The junctional epithelium may begin to show the development of rete ridges or rete pegs. Accumulation of lymphocytes (mainly T cells) beneath the JE Fibroblast show decreased capacity for collagen destruction

Clinical changes- Deepen i ng of the color- bluish red Changes in Size Surface texture Contour

Established lesion Microscopic features Plasma cells predominate Rete ridge formation is increased The JE shows widened intercellular spaces filled with cellular debris In Connective tissue – further destruction of collagen fibers
