About This Presentation

goal Setting for students in college, placement training and self improvement

Slide Content

“The future belongs to those who
believe in the beauty of their
dreams.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

GOAL SETTING

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOAL SETTING
•Goal: a long-term target
•Think of it as a reward at the top of a ladder;
you must climb the ladder before reaching
the reward
•Goals keep you focused, increase self-
esteem, and help you overcome
procrastination, fear, and failure
•Setting goals will help you become more
successful in your career

What is a Goal Anyway?
According to Merriam-Webster a goal is: the
end toward which effort is directed. Goals are
dreams and wants except a goal is more
specific.

Think of a goal as your final destination,
if you don’t know what your final destination is,
there is no way to plan on how to get there.
No planning = Failing

Do You Want To?
•Develop self-esteem?
•Gain a positive outlook on the future?
•Decrease unhealthy habits and behaviours?
•Improve your productivity & performance?
•Develop time-management skills and battle
procrastination?

What Types of Goals Are There?
•Long-Term goals can be achieved over a long period of time.
•Short-Term goals are smaller and can be fulfilled in the
immediate future.
•Action-Oriented goals are within your own power to be reached
and do not depend on external factors or people.
•Outcome-Based goals are not in your power to be reached
because they depend on another person or factor.
Researchers say achievement improves most when goals are
specific, action-oriented, short-term, and challenging.
You could benefit from goal setting!

The Purpose of Goals
•The purpose of goals is to give you something
that you want to enhance your life in some
way, so the most important thing you need to
know about goals is that you ought to have
some.

Definition of a goal
A goal is:

A Dream

Attainable

Measurable

Has a Time Limit

Within your control

In Writing

Types of Goals
•Long Term Goals:
10-year, 5-year and 1-year goals
•Short Term Goals:
goals for the next 9 months, 6 months and 3
months
•Immediate Goals:
1-30 days from now

Important Aspects of Goal Setting
Owning the goal
Controlling the goal
Setting a time frame for the goal

Owning the Goal
•Each goal must belong to you
•YOU need to decide what your goals
will be
–Do not allow others to totally influence
the goals you set-You may take
suggestions and opinions-but discard
anything which is being imposed

Controlling the Goal
•Have the right information when
creating goals
•Know what resources and constraints
are involved
•Be flexible and maintain realistic control

Setting a Time Frame
•Setting a time frame makes the goal
measurable
•You will know when you have reached your
goal
•Stay positive and use detail when writing
goals

How to Set Goals
•Learning how to set goals is as important as
knowing what the goal should contain.

•What’s important to remember about setting
goals is the correct F.R.A.M.E. of mind.

•What is meant by “frame of mind?”
  Each
letter in the word “frame” illustrates the
following:

F.R.A.M.E
•Fantasize - Dream your wildest dreams and make sure that
your goals match your values. Ask yourself: what do you want
to be doing in 1 year? 5 years? What kind of person do I want
to be?
•Reality - Fantasies can become reality, depending on how
hard you are willing to work for them.
•Aim - Define your goal(s) by striking a balance between
Fantasy and Reality; set a high but realistic goal.

F.R.A.M.E
•Method – Be truthful to yourself by narrowing
your choices or goals to the ones you really
intend to accomplish. Don’t be afraid to ask
for help.
•Evaluation - Process the results, but don’t
make it the last step; evaluation should be on
going.

Goal setting works!!!!!!
•Have you ever sat down on a Sunday evening in front
of a pile work and asked yourself "What happened to
the weekend?"

•When done properly, goal setting helps you do those
day to day activities that you know you should do to
be successful but don't always get done.

•More generally, goal setting helps you to identify
what you want to accomplish and find a way to do it.

5 Qualities of Effective Goals
S.M.A.R.T.
•Before you begin your goal setting process it is
important to know what qualities your goals
should embody.
•Effective goals have three important qualities.
They are realistic, measurable, and reviewed.

Set SMART Goals
•SS = Specific
•MM = Measurable
•AA = Attainable
•RR = Rewarding/Realistic
•TT = Timely

•SS = Specific
•MM = Measurable
•AA = Attainable
•RR = Realistic
•TT = Timely

Specific
•Goals are no place to be vague; ambiguous
goals produce ambiguous results
•Specifics establish:
•Who is involved
•What is to be accomplished
•Where it will be accomplished
•When it should be accomplished
•Which conditions are to be met (requirements and
constraints)
•Why it is important (purpose or benefit)

Specific
•Uses specific terms rather than vague,
abstract ones
–Inappropriate: Employees will be empowered
–Appropriate: Employees will be authorized to
make more decisions

a SPECIFIC example
Instead of writing:
“I will lose weight and
become more healthy”
a more SPECIFIC goal would be:
“I will lose 1 inch from my
waist”

•SS = Specific
•MM = Measurable
•AA = Attainable
•RR = Realistic
•TT = Timely

Measurable
If you can't measure it, you can't manage
it.

WHAT IS A MEASUREMENT…
•A means of determining when or if goal has been
attained.
•A date for completion (e.g., by August 31)
•A whole number (e.g., 250 of 500 applications will be
screened for minimum qualifications)

•A percent of increase (e.g., a 10% increase in the
number of return customers)

WHAT IS A MEASUREMENT…
•An amount of time (e.g., a decrease in time required, from 5
to 3 days)
•A percent of decrease (e.g., a 50% reduction in the average
number of errors, i.e., from 20 errors per 1000 keystrokes to
10 errors)
•A cost savings (e.g., a 50% savings)

•An improvement in quality (e.g., more favorable participant
reaction to a training program after a change to program
content).

a MEASURABLE example
I want to read more
or
I will read 3 novels before my
birthday

Measurable
•Includes some method for objectively
measuring their achievement
–Inappropriate: Consumers will be delighted
–Appropriate: We will receive at least 12
unsolicited testimonials from our consumers
expressing positive reactions to our services

•SS = Specific
•MM = Measurable
•AA = Attainable
•RR = Realistic
•TT = Timely

Attainable
•If goals you set are too far out of your reach, you probably
won't commit to doing anything.
•A goal needs to stretch you slightly so you feel you can do it
BUT it will need a real commitment from you
•Goals that are unreachable at the onset, lead to negative
experiences and frustration
•Attainable does not mean EASY

an ATTAINABLE example
I will Never watch TV
or
Limit TV to one hour on
working days

Attainable/Achievable
•Is challenging but realistic
–Inappropriate: All consumers will be seen by a
counselor within 2 days of intake
–Appropriate: Seventy-five percent of consumers
will be seen by a counselor within 2 months of
intake

•SS = Specific
•MM = Measurable
•AA = Attainable
•RR = Realistic
•TT = Timely

Realistic
•not a synonym for "easy"
•Means “do-able”
•Too difficult and you set the stage for failure,
but too low sends the message that you aren't
very capable

Let’s get REAL!
Never eat sweets again
or
Eat a piece of fruit
instead of sweets
once a day

Realistic
•Follows the business strategy of the
organization and unit
–Inappropriate: Clear all customer complain
–Appropriate: Clear 50 non payment complains by
Monday and no new complain in this week

•SS = Specific
•MM = Measurable
•AA = Attainable
•RR = Realistic
•TT = Timely

Its about TIME!
•Set a timeframe for the goal
•Putting an end point on your goal gives you a
clear target to work towards
•Without a time limit, there's no urgency to
start taking action now.
•Time must be measurable, attainable and
realistic

a Timely example
I will get organized
or
Within 1 week, I will
clear out the pending
bills

Timely
•Specifies a time period (short-, medium-, or
long-term)
–Inappropriate: Reduce the size of the waiting list
by 10%
–Appropriate: Reduce the size of the waiting list by
10% during the first two quarters

Also… don’t forget…
Goals must also be…

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPE OF GOALS
WHICH HELP YOU FULFILL YOUR VISION?

Different Goals
Physical Goals
These are the goals that are related to your
physical well being and health. If you need to
lose weight, or improve your physical
condition and health in some way, you will
need to set these goals.

Different Goals
Career /Business/Professional Goals
Where do you want to be in five years from
now, ten years from! In what position you see
yourself and what you will do to reach there,
what kind of value addition you will do to your
skills, both hard and soft, will fall under career
goals.

Different Goals
Financial Goals
When are you planning your retirement, what
kind of house you want to live in, what kind of
car you want to drive, where you want to go for
vacation, what kind of education do you want to
afford for your children?
Answer to all these will depend on you financial
planning, and achievement of your financial
Goal Setting.

Different Goals
Relationships & Family Goals
Relationships and your family are one of the
biggest assets that you may have. How will you
improve your old friendships, and make new
ones?
What will you do for your spouse, children,
parents, greater family, so as to take these
relationships to a greater depth? It is worth it to
set goals in this area to have a fulfilled life.

Different Goals
Self Development & Spiritual Goals
You are like a fruit. As long as you are green you are growing.
If you stop growing you ripen and fall to ground.
One of the greatest blessings of human life is the lifelong
ability to learn. So, keep learning, keep growing internally.
Set goals for improving your attitude, self image, faith etc.
People those who are spiritually higher enjoy better self
image, better relationships, and more financial success as they
have stronger faith.
Spiritual upliftment is an important purpose of all human life
and one should set goals in this area of self development.

Different Goals
Pleasure Goals
As the children of God it is your right to enjoy
and have pleasure. Set goals for your
enjoyment and how you are going to spend
time for yourself. Goals may be set for
entertainment, learning new art or for taking
up new hobbies.

Different Goals
Social Goals
More often your success will be measured by
what you do for the society rather than your
personal achievements. As a human being it is
your responsibility to give back to society
more than what you receive from it. Any goals
that you set for this purpose are Social Goals.

If you look at these goals carefully you will see
that all these goals are actually interdependent
•For example how well you will do financially depends on your
progression in your career. Similarly your career, relationships
will depend on the level of your personal and spiritual
development as well as your physical well being.
•The type of pleasure that you will be able to afford and even
some of the relationships that you will enjoy will be
dependent on your career and financial situations.
•Of course you will not want to expand your family if you
cannot afford it financially.

If you look at these goals carefully you will see
that all these goals are actually interdependent
•So, while setting a goal, you should take into
consideration different aspects of your life. Then only
you will be able to enjoy a balanced success.
•If you set goals that are only materialistic in nature,
such as only career goals and financial goals, while
neglecting other goals in life, chances are that you will
do well in these two areas, but will be stressed out,
burned out, and unhappy at that the end of it.

REVIEWED
•Share your goals with friends and family members
who care about your success. Pick one of these
persons who will hold you accountable in addition to
yourself. In the meantime, remind yourself regularly
of the goals you have set for yourself.
•You can write your goals in your calendar, on a
mirror, or a desk-wherever you will see them often.
Check your progress regularly.
•Ask your friend or family member to check on your
progress. They might even offer you some additional
incentive for accomplishing your goal!

"AN UNWRITTEN WANT IS A WISH, A DREAM,
A NEVER HAPPEN. THE DAY YOU PUT YOUR
GOAL IN WRITING IS THE DAY IT BECOMES A
COMMITMENT THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR
LIFE. ARE YOU READY?"
- TOM HOPKINS

•Setting goals is a means of identifying and
plotting how you are going to achieve your
aims in life.
•By writing down your goals you are
committing yourself to accomplishing them;
therefore, make sure that your goals are
important to YOU!!!!!

Motivation
•Motivation and commitment are what make
us strive to achievement. They give us the
push, desire, and resolve to complete all of
the other steps in the Goal process.
•This motivation can be obtained by
developing a personal statement that creates
a high level of emotion and energy that
guarantees achievement.

Motivation Story
•One story -”It is widely believed that
 Jamsedji Tata
decided to build the hotel after he was refused entry
to one of the city's grand hotels of the
time,
Watson's Hotel, as it was restricted to "whites
only". (However, this story has been challenged by
some)The motivation of being refused entry might
have provided the necessary fuel for him to achieve
this goal.

Commitment
•Commitment creates more accountability and is what sets
us on direct course to reach our goals. It may create costly
negative consequences upon failure to attain a goal.
•Making a commitment might be something like having
invested your savings in your new business which you will
lose if it fails.
•Motivation and commitment are specific to your situation
and life and only you can form statements that will ensure
you reach your goal the quickest.
•The more personal you make your motivation and
commitment statements for each goal, the more motivated
you will be to accomplish your goal.

BE FLEXIBLE
•Be ready to re-adjust your goals and not give
up on them. If they are too easy, they won't
be worthwhile, and if they are too tough, and
you will start thinking that the idea of goal
setting is worthless. Remember, small
victories lead to big successes.

How Do You Choose a Goal?
Connect your goal with your talents, values, and aspirations.
•Your goal should represent an important accomplishment to you.
•Choose a goal that you have the power to reach but requires
effort.
•If you cannot answer the question "How will you know when you
achieve the goal?" then the goal is too vague.
•Studies have found that at-risk students can be helped most by
short-term, realistic goals that help to increase confidence and
avoid failure.

How Do You
Accomplish Your Goal?
You have to decide what you want first of all.
•The problem with so many people is that they do not know
what they really want. In other words they are not at all clear
about what they want in life.
•Setting your goals, needs you to make a decision about that
which you want, and determine when you want to have
achieved that thing.
•In other words you must put a deadline to what you currently
want. Get clear about what you want. Have a good plan of
attack.

Start Small

Start small, but keep walking. Goals don’t
necessarily have to be big ones. When you set
your goal too high, you might find it too
overwhelming and time consuming and just give
up, or make another one, just as big. It’s akin to
quitting cold turkey – there are setbacks.

Be positive

Be positive when stating your goals. Instead of
saying, “I am not going to miss my exercise
routine today,” say “I’m really busy, so I’ll
probably just make time for 20 minutes of
exercise today.”
Stating your goal positively will help you view
it as a good thing to do, and not as a
byproduct of what you had to avoid.

Small Increments…
Set goals in small increments, complete with time, dates,
amount, some details.
If you tell yourself, “I’m going to be a classical singer” and
then sit around and wait for it to suddenly happen, you could
be waiting all your life. Start with singing lessons for a month,
and then a year and expose yourself to classical music. You
can then progress to more singing lessons year after year.
By breaking down your goals in smaller, workable units, you
are more likely to make them come true. Remember, even
the great ones had to start somewhere.

Spread out your Goals

Spread out your goals. So maybe we do have certain
general goals that apply to all areas of our lives like, “I
want to be successful” or “I want to be rich” but those
would seem as far away as kanyakumari viewed from
Kashmir.
Instead, try making tiny goals for different aspects of
your life, one or two for each, even more if you like.
These areas are: family and home, career, financial ,
social, physical, mental and spiritual.

Don’t Underestimate Yourself
Don’t underestimate yourself. It’s tempting to
sometimes just slack off, or let yourself off too easy.
If you want to run a marathon, then don’t try to run
just a mile or two a day when you know you are
more than capable of running five miles, even ten.
The fear of failure is sometimes to blame for setting
our goals too low. How often have we said, “I don’t
really want to volunteer for that ‘cause I might mess
it up. And then my classmates and friends will make
fun of me.”

Some Fears are unfounded..
Remember that some fears are unfounded.
How do you know you’ll actually mess it? And
how do you know for sure your classmates
will laugh at your effort? If you try to reason
with your fears, more often than not, you’ll
realize that there really is no reason for you to
be reluctant and that in fact, you can do it.

Why Goals Fail
•The goal was not written down.
•Rewards for achieving the goals were not given.
•The goal was unrealistic or not specific enough.
•The goal is not really believable or little commitment exists.
•Keep changing or switching goals with the weather
•The person who set the goal has not told anyone else for
added accountability, help and support.
•The goal was not incorporated into a realistic plan that
includes measurements, timelines and resources.

WRITE IT DOWN
•Write it down. Putting your goal down on paper is
more than just memorizing it. You are actually
confirming your willingness to make it come true.
•A written list of goals is an effective reminder of what
you need to do and once you’re done, a good review
of your accomplishment.
•A simple list on a piece of notebook paper is fine. You
may want to keep it up somewhere near and visible,
as a constant reminder to work toward your goals.

Affirm It
•Affirm it. Affirmation is really more than writing down,
“I am going to study at IIM”- twenty times every day.
It’s actually being conscious not only of your thought
processes, but also of your acts during the day.
•If you’re watching more of TV, and then you recall your
affirmation and do your fortnightly review-You will
realise that you are not putting words and thoughts into
action and you will start doing it-You better-Because
unlike others –you have goals to achieve.

Stop Procrastinating
•Stop procrastinating (Postponing). Time wastage is one of the
greatest crimes in history. If Henry Ford put off studying and
tinkering with machines for another time, someone else
would have improved on automobiles and he wouldn't have
gone down in history as a pioneer.
•If you’re used to procrastination, being bullheaded about a
goal can seem scary at first. Try to set a schedule and then
reward yourself each time you meet it.

The Benefits of Setting Goals
•Suffer less from stress and anxiety
•Concentrate better
•Show more self-confidence
•Perform better
•Are happier

What is Goal Setting?
•The Process of Writing Down the Dream and
Desire
•A tool for assessment
•Providing direction
•Its like a “MAP” to reach our Destination
•Success is fixing and achieving worthy Goals in
Life

Now Plan your goals
in a Goal Book
