Let’s Learn This! Ways of propagating trees and fruit-bearing trees. budding marcotting grafting
Review What is an orchard? What are the different kind of orchard?
Motivation: What can you see in these pictures?
Presentation! Have you heard the word marcotting ? Grafting? Budding? What are they? Let pupils look at the pictures again. Let them familiarize with the ways on how to propagate plants.
Discussion of New Concept ! Let them tell something about what they see in the pictures. Have them share their knowledge about the three ways in propagating plants.
Discussion: Have each identify what way of plant propagation is used in each picture. Let them prove their answer.
Discussion : 1. Air layering or marcotting is a method of propagating new trees and shrubs from stems still attached to the parent plant. The stem is wrapped with damp moss to encourage roots to form.
Discussion : 2. Grafting and budding are horticultural techniques used to join parts from two or more plants so that they appear to grow as a single plant. In grafting, the upper part (scion) of one plant grows on the root system (rootstock) of another plant. In the budding process, a bud is taken from one plant and grown on another.
Discussion : Budding is a form of asexual reproduction in which a new organism develops from an outgrowth or bud due to cell division at one particular site. The new organism remains attached as it grows, separating from the parent organism only when it is mature, leaving behind scar tissue.
Developing mastery: Show to the pupils pictures on how plants are propagated. Let them tell what way is it then explain.
Presentation: What can you see in the pictures? What do they show?
Group work ! Have each group make an illustration on how to propagate plants. Have them explain their work.
