Reading – Word Reading

Lesson Objectives By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to: 1 . Apply knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes to read and understand new words. 2 . Accurately decode unfamiliar words by focusing on all letters. 3 . Improve vocabulary and comprehension through guided reading and exercises.

Introduction Word reading involves using knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Examples: 1 . Root: play → playing, played 2 . Prefix: unhappy (‘un-’ means not) 3 . Suffix: happiness (‘-ness’ means state of being) Today we will practice breaking words into parts to understand and read them.

Root Words Definition: The basic part of a word that carries meaning. Examples: • act = action, actor, react • form = reform, transform, formation • cycle = bicycle, recycle, unicycle

Prefixes Prefixes are added to the beginning of root words to change their meaning. Examples: • un- (not): unhappy, unfair • re- (again): rewrite, replay • dis- (opposite): disagree, disconnect

Suffixes Suffixes are added to the end of root words to change their form or meaning. Examples: • -ful (full of): hopeful, joyful • -less (without): careless, powerless • -ment (state of): enjoyment, development

Guided Practice Break down the following words: 1. Unhappiness → un + happy + ness 2. Reconnection → re + connect + ion 3. Disagreement → dis + agree + ment Discuss meanings with pupils.
