Representing Direct Proportion Graphically Grade 7 - 1 Hour Class

Introduction to Direct Proportion In direct proportion, when one quantity increases, the other increases at the same rate. Mathematically: y = kx (k is the constant of proportionality).

Example: Cost of Apples Cost of apples is directly proportional to the quantity. If 1 kg costs $3: • 2 kg → $6 • 3 kg → $9 • 4 kg → $12 • 5 kg → $15

Graph: Cost vs Quantity

Using a Graph to Interpret Direct Proportion The graph is a straight line passing through the origin. • Shows constant rate of change • Helps find unknown values quickly • Confirms proportionality

Example: Distance and Time A car travels 60 km in 1 hour. Distance is directly proportional to time: • 2 hours → 120 km • 3 hours → 180 km • 4 hours → 240 km

Graph: Distance vs Time

Summary ✔ Direct proportion: y = kx ✔ Graph is a straight line from origin ✔ Used to find missing values and check relationships ✔ Real-life examples: cost, distance, time, etc.
