Content & Learning Resources Content: Comparison and Contrast as a Text Structure in Expository Writing Learning Resources: - Sample texts: Sinulog Festival and Kadaugan sa Mactan - Venn diagram handouts - Manila paper and markers - Printed articles or projector display

1. Introductory Activity (5 mins) DO: - Share with your seatmate: “What local festival have you attended or heard of? Describe it briefly.” SAY: - “Many parts of Cebu and Lapu-Lapu celebrate vibrant festivals. Today, you’ll find out how two major celebrations compare and contrast with each other.” Transition: "Let’s now dig deeper into the details of these events through reading."

2. Activity (20 mins) DO: - Read the two texts below. In pairs, complete the Venn diagram comparing the two events in terms of purpose, history, and activities. SAY: - “Let’s read about the Sinulog Festival and Kadaugan sa Mactan. These festivals are both from Cebu, but they serve different cultural purposes. Take note of similarities and differences.” Reading Texts (Springboard): Text 1: Sinulog Festival (Excerpt) - Celebrated every January in Cebu City honoring Señor Santo Niño. - Features street dancing, fluvial parades, bright costumes. - Mix of religious devotion and cultural pride. Text 2: Kadaugan sa Mactan (Excerpt) - Held every April in Lapu-Lapu City. - Commemorates Datu Lapu-Lapu’s victory over Magellan in 1521. - Includes battle reenactments and cultural presentations. Transition: "Now that you’ve read both texts, let’s analyze how comparison and contrast is used to present information clearly."

3. Analysis (10 mins) DO: In your group, discuss the following questions based on the texts and your Venn diagram. 1. Prestructural: What are the two festivals about? 2. Unistructural: Name one way they are different. 3. Multistructural: Give three ways they are similar. 4. Relational: How do these differences reflect their cultural purpose? 5. Extended Abstract: Why is using comparison and contrast effective when writing about these two festivals? SAY: - “Let’s reflect critically on what we’ve read using deeper-level questions. Talk about these as a group.” Transition: "Now that you’ve explored the structure through discussion, let me walk you through how comparison and contrast works in expository writing."

4. Abstraction (10 mins) DO: - Listen and copy the key points on comparison and contrast in your notebook. SAY: - “Here’s what we need to understand about comparison and contrast as a text structure:” - Comparison and contrast texts present similarities and differences clearly. - Helps readers clarify understanding, especially for similar events or ideas. - Signal words include both, similarly, however, while. - Visual organizers like Venn diagrams break down ideas. - Purpose: To explain complex ideas by showing relationships. Transition: "Let’s now use what we’ve learned to express the comparison creatively based on your strengths."

5. Application (15-20 mins) DO: Choose ONE task that best suits your strength. Work alone or in pairs. Use your Venn diagram and texts. Tasks (Multiple Intelligences): - Linguistic: Write a comparison paragraph (5-7 sentences) with signal words. - Interpersonal: Interview a classmate and script a dialogue. - Visual-Spatial: Create a side-by-side poster with keywords and icons. - Musical: Compose and perform a short jingle about the festivals. - Kinesthetic: Act out a freeze-frame showing both festivals; narrate. - Logical-Mathematical: Complete a comparison chart and write an analysis. SAY: - “Choose a task that fits your learning strength and showcase your learning.” Transition: “Excellent! Let’s check your understanding with an assessment.”

6. Assessment (10 mins) DO: Read the texts again carefully, then answer the questions below. Part 1: Multiple Choice 1. Which phrase best shows contrast between the Sinulog Festival and Kadaugan sa Mactan? 2. Which signal word in this sentence shows comparison? 3. Which structure is best for organizing an article on two festivals? Part 2: Short Response 4. Identify two similarities between the festivals. Write in complete sentences. Part 3: Constructed Response 5. Write a short paragraph comparing and contrasting the festivals. Use at least two signal words for comparison and two for contrast. Part 4: Critical Thinking 6. Why is understanding differences important for visitors to Cebu? Give two reasons. SAY: - “Write your answers carefully.” Transition: "Before we end, let’s reflect on today’s learning."

7. Assignment DO: Interview a family member or neighbor about another local festival (not Sinulog or Kadaugan). Write three similarities and three differences compared to one festival studied. SAY: - “Bring your notes next class.”
