What is Grammar? - Grammar is the foundation of any language. - It provides rules for word formation and sentence structure. - Helps us communicate ideas clearly and correctly.
Parts of Speech - Definition: Words are grouped based on their function in a sentence. - There are 8 main Parts of Speech: 1. Noun – names of people, places, things (e.g., teacher, city) 2. Pronoun – replaces nouns (e.g., he, she, they) 3. Verb – expresses action or state (e.g., run, is) 4. Adjective – describes nouns (e.g., tall, happy) 5. Adverb – modifies verbs/adjectives (e.g., quickly, very) 6. Preposition – shows relationship (e.g., in, on, at) 7. Conjunction – joins words or clauses (e.g., and, but, or) 8. Interjection – expresses emotion (e.g., wow!, oh!)
Tenses - Definition: Tense shows the time of an action. - There are 3 main tenses: 1. Present – action happening now (e.g., She walks) 2. Past – action happened before (e.g., She walked) 3. Future – action yet to happen (e.g., She will walk) - Each has 4 forms: Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous.
Examples of Tenses Simple Present – I play football. Present Continuous – I am playing football. Present Perfect – I have played football. Simple Past – I played football. Past Continuous – I was playing football. Simple Future – I will play football.
Auxiliary (Helping) Verbs - Definition: Verbs that support the main verb to form tense, mood, or voice. - Types: 1. Be verbs: is, am, are, was, were 2. Have verbs: has, have, had 3. Do verbs: do, does, did - Modal Auxiliaries: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must - Examples: - She is running. - They have finished. - He can swim.
