GRAMMAR – The Progressive Forms of Verbs
Recognizing Progressive Forms Each of the six tenses has a progressive form. The six progressive
forms of a verb make use of one principal part: the present participle.
Conjugating the Progressive Forms of Verbs To conjugate the progressive forms of a verb, add the
present participle of a verb to a conjugation of the basic forms of be. Below are progressive forms of the
verb try used with two different pronouns.

Exercise 1 Recognizing Progressive Forms and Tenses Each sentence contains a verb in its
progressive form. Underline the verb phrase in each sentence. Then write the form of that verb phrase on
the line at the right.
EXAMPLE: She had been studying all afternoon. Past Perfect Progressive
1. The workers will be repairing the building.
2. The architect is explaining his plans.
3. Susan will have been working for two hours by 9 A.M.
4. They were discussing important political issues.
5. Diane has been telling us a folk tale.
Exercise 2 Conjugating Progressive Forms Complete a short conjugation of the progressive
forms of each verb below. Use the pronouns shown in parentheses.
