Grammatical Signals/Expressions General to Particular and Problem-Solution Patterns
Activity: What’s in the box? Inside this box is a common object you use every day. Your task is to guess what it is! I will give you clues, starting from a general hint and getting more specific each time. After each clue, you may raise your hand to guess the object. Listen carefully—once you make a guess, you can’t change it! When someone guesses correctly or all clues are given, I will reveal the object.
LESSON OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students shall be able to: 1. define grammatical signals; 2. identify the different patterns of idea development; 3. distinguish appropriate grammatical signals to each pattern of idea development; and 4. write a paragraph about a social issue using a pattern of idea development with appropriate grammatical signals.

LET’S PRACTICE! Directions: Analyze the following sentences and identify whether the underlined part of the sentence expresses general thought or particular thought . In this time of the pandemic, individuals find ways to seek income even in quarantine. First obvious example is online selling . Online sellers have sold a lot of products to online customers. For example, different foods such as budin , palabok , leche flan, even breads are sold. Restaurants now offer takeout orders. Previously, most establishments only cater to dine in orders.
Problem and solution Problem and solution is a pattern of organization where information in a write up is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution).
Problem and solution Example: Employees from various sectors were laid off from their jobs; as a response, the government provided jobs.
PROBLEM AND SOLUTION To present a problem: The problem is that… One major issue is… A common difficulty is… A challenge faced by… There is a concern about… The main drawback of…
PROBLEM AND SOLUTION To present a solution: One possible solution is… A way to address this is… To solve this problem… An effective approach is… This can be resolved by… To overcome this issue…
LET’S PRACTICE! Directions: Analyze the following sentences and identify the part of the sentence expressing the problem. Meanwhile, encircle the phrase stating solution. Many students do not have enough time to study because they get distracted. One way to solve this is by making a study schedule and avoiding phone use while studying. Some people have unhealthy eating habits, which can cause health problems. To fix this, they should eat a balanced diet with more fruits and vegetables. Heavy traffic makes traveling slow and frustrating for many people. This problem can be solved by improving public transportation and promoting carpooling.
