ORAL COMMUNICATION Types of Speech Style
Objectives Identify the types of speech style. Present a scenario using the appropriate speech style based on a given situation. and; Cite importance of speech style in communication.
Speech Style the way on how we talk. According to Martin Joo’s (1976) definition, speech style is the form of language that the speaker uses which characterized by the degree of formality from the most formal to the least formal style.
1. Frozen ·it is the most formal style which uses the most complex grammatical structure and vocabulary known only to experts in a particular field
1. Frozen ··it is usually used during respectful events and ceremonies and involves a very large group of people whose members are known to one another.
1. Frozen ·It is intended to remembered in a very formal setting and does not require any feedback from the audience
2. Formal ·it aims to inform and captivate audience .
2. Formal ·it is generally used in formal situation where there is at least amount of shared background and the communication in this style is largely one way with little or no feedback from the audience. .
3. Consultative This style is the standard one. It is best used for business and professional relationships.
3. Consultative it happens in two-way participation. ·it is used in negotiating with the strangers or work colleagues.
4. Casual It is the most common speech style used among friends and coworkers. Jargon, slang, or the vernacular language are used.
4. Casual ·Free and easy participation of both speaker and listener. Diction or vocabulary to use is informal or colloquial
5. Intimate It is a style among intimate members of a family or friends that do not need a complete language with a clear articulation.
5. Intimate ·it is free and easy participation. ·language used is not public .
