CONTEXT CLUES These are words that appear in sentences to help understand the meanings of difficult words.

DEFINITION TYPES OF CONTEXT CLUES the unfamiliar word is defined in a sentence

EXAMPLE: An Archeologist is a person who searches for treasures from sunken ships and ancient tombs to obtain valuable relics, artifacts, and relics such as the Balanghai boat. (definition: a person who searches for treasures, artifacts, and relics)

SYNONYM a similar word is placed in the same sentence to know the meaning of the unfamiliar word

EXAMPLE: The coach doesn’t allow taunting, so don’t let her hear you making fun of the other team. (Synonym: making fun of)

Activity: 1. Abigail knew that to get a catfish, she would have to try  bottom fishing ,  a technique of dropping the lure to the water floor to catch the fish that dwell there. 2. The mechanic needs to replace the entire  exhaust manifold ,  which is a series of pipes that combines exhaust from different places into one pipe. Identify the meaning of the underlined word through context clues.

CONFLICT- the opposition of persons or forces that gives rise to the dramatic action in a drama or fiction.

TYPES OF CONFLICT: A. MAN vs. MAN It is a character’s struggle or fight with another character.

B. MAN vs. NATURE It is a character’s struggle or fight against environmental phenomenon such as disasters.

Examples: Man struggling over the effects of typhoon, earthquake, tsunami, flooding. Living in the wild.

Examples: A student being rejected or not accepted by his/her classmates because of being different.
