Light and Shadow MAVIS P. ALLAUIGAN Grade IV Masigasig - Adviser
Objective Describe the changes in the position and length of shadows in the surroundings as the position of the sun changes. (S4ES-IVh-9)
The Donkey’s Savior Unlocking of Difficulties Cruel Unkind, unpleasant and causing pain to people or animals intentionally.
The Donkey’s Savior Unlocking of Difficulties Traveler A person or ting that travels In distant places.
The Donkey’s Savior Unlocking of Difficulties Ragged road A rocky o rough surface. Not easy to travel
The Donkey’s Savior Unlocking of Difficulties village A community within a town or city.
The Donkey’s Savior Read the Story
The Donkey’s Savior It was a very hot day. The donkey had no rest for the last one week. Its master was a very cruel man. He gave very little food and water to the donkey, but beat him soundly and made him work very hard all day.
The donkey’s job was to carry travelers and their luggage across the ragged road to the next village. On one day, the donkey was lugging a fat traveler and his two huge bags.
At mid-day, the donkey fell tired and stopped for some rest. As there was no shade nearby, the traveler sat in the donkey’s shadow. The donkey’s master too wanted to sit in the shadow. So he said to the traveler, “the donkey is mine, so is his shadow.
You have paid only for the donkey to carry you to the next town. So, let me sit in its shadow.” The engraved traveler said, I’ll have paid for the service of the donkey. Since its shadow cannot be separated from it, I have the right to use its shadow too.”
While the two men were fighting over its shadow, the donkey made escape from the fat traveler and the cruel man.
1. What was the donkey’s job? The donkey's job was to carry travelers and their luggage across the ragged road to the next village. Question 1
2. W ho are the characters in the story? The donkey, the cruel master and the fat traveler Question 2
3. How did the donkey’s master treat him? The donkey's master treated him very cruelly. He gave the donkey very little food and water, beat him soundly, and made him work very hard all day without rest. Question 3
4. H ow did the traveler respond to the donkey’s master request? The traveler responded to the donkey's master's request by asserting his right to use the donkey's shadow as well. The traveler argued that since he had paid for the service of the donkey, he also had the right to use its shadow, stating that the shadow cannot be separated from the donkey. Question 4
5. What do we need to form a shadow? We need an object and light from the sun, moon, or another light source. Question 5
how do shadows change throughout the day as the sun moves in the sky?
It's because of how the sun moves! Have you ever noticed that your shadow looks different in the morning, afternoon , and evening?
what object cast a shadow where the traveler rested in the meantime?
How to form a shadow? Conditions Required for the Formation of Shadows Source of light Opaque object surface
Cardinal Directions T o determine the position and length of the object, we need to consider the cardinal directions. The cardinal directions play a significant role in describing the changes in the position and length of shadows in the surroundings as the sun's position changes.
Cardinal Directions The sun goes up in the East direction and the goes down in the West direction .
The changes in position and length of the shadow in relation to the position of the sun.
Shadow is a dark area formed when straight light rays are blocked by opaque objects. When light strikes opaque objects they don’t allow light to pass through and form shadows. So shadows are formed when light strikes on opaque objects. Rays of light object shadow Shadows are places where Light is blocked
Shadows are formed only when a source of light is present. Rays of light object shadow Shadows are places where Light is blocked Shadows are are always formed on the opposite side of the source of light
Shadows does not show details of an object. It only shows the outline. Rays of light object shadow Shadows are places where Light is blocked A Shadows is always black in color. It does not show the color of the object.
When the light source is near the object the shadow is big, but if the source is far from the object the size of the shadow is small. The position and length of a shadow depends on the position of the sun. Rays of light object shadow Shadows are places where Light is blocked
In a day, the position of the sun in relation to the earth changes. (this is because the earth is rotating on its axis. Therefore, the direction of the rays of the sun also changes, hence, shadows “move” or change in position.
In the morning, as the sun rises or sets in the afternoon, it is low on the horizon, its light rays are slanted as they hit the ground, so longer shadow are formed. In the morning Position of the sun- East Position of the shadow—Towards to the west Size of the shadow- Shadow is larger than the body.
In the morning, as the sun rises or sets in the afternoon, it is low on the horizon, its light rays are slanted as they hit the ground, so longer shadow are formed. When the sun is high or nearly above the horizon, the sunlight strikes the ground nearly at the right angle, so it forms shorter shadow.
When the sun is directly above the horizon, the light rays of the sun strike in a straight line above the objects so almost no visible or shortest shadow is seen on the ground. At noon time Position of the sun- on the top Position of the shadow—under the feet Size of the shadow- shadow is much smaller than the body
In the evening, the position of the sun is lower in the sky, leading to longer shadows cast by objects due to the angle of the sunlight. In the evening Position of the sun- towards the west Position of the shadow—Towards east Size of the shadow- longer than the body
The changes in the position and length of shadows in the surroundings depend on the angle at which the sunlight strikes the object to the ground.
Let’s try this!
Icebreaker Directions: Choose the statement that best describe the position and length of shadows of the sun in each picture. Write only the letter. a. During noon time, you can see the shadow under the tree. b. In the morning, the sun is low in the horizon and longer shadow is formed. c. When the sun rises or sets in the afternoon, its light rays are slanted as it hits the ground resulting to a longer shadow. d. As the sun moves up or nearly above the horizon, the shadow becomes shorter. e. The sunlight strikes the ground at nearly right angle so shadow. f. becomes shorter.
Group Activity
Rules 1. Works quietly. 2. Always cooperate with your group. 3. Think and give ideas. Time on task 4. Enjoy while working with groupmates. 5. Always follow safety precautions in doing the activity. 6. Review your works.
Group 1: Only Shadow Knows! Direction: Shadows are created when the sun’s rays are blocked by an object. The higher the sun the shorter the shadow. Look at the objects below. Notice where the is is positioned. Draw a shadow that would be cast by the object according to where the sun is positioned.
Group 2: Shadow Mapping! Instruction: 1. Go outside the classroom and choose one member to stand under the sun in an open area. Answer the following questions. Guided Questions : 1.What is the time when a person standing under the sun? 2.What is the position of the sun? 3.What is the length of the shadow?
Group 3: Find My Place! Shadow opaque sun Longer shorter direction Shadows are produced when light hits an _______object which prevents the light beams from passing through. When an object blocks the light's path, then darkness appears on the other side. This darkness is called a ________. The __________is a source of light that when hits an object causes shadows. As the sun rises in the morning or sets in the afternoon, it is low in the horizon. Its light rays are slanted and _________ shadows are formed. When the sun is high or nearly above the horizon, the sunlight strikes the ground and _________shadows are formed.
Group 4: Find My Place! Direction: Look at the picture below and observe it properly. Answer the questions that follows. Write your answer in manila paper. Questions: 1. What are the objects found in the picture? 2.What object produces light? 3.Does the light pass through the tree? Why? 4.What is formed when the light is blocked? 5.What is the direction of the source of light? 6.What is the length of the shadow? 7.Can the length of the shadows determine the time of the day?

R ead the situation below and answer orally each question. Situation: Mang Tomas is a farmer. He harvested the fruits early in the morning. After that Mang Tomas decided to eat his lunch then go back to his work. He feed the cows and other animals. At the afternoon he decided to go home. He is happy for having a productive day. Guided Question: English (Noting Details) 1. Who is the farmer in the story? 2. What are the things he did as a farmer? 3. How did Mang Tomas determine the time of the day? 4. What do you think Mang Tomas will do to feel cooler? 5. What are the importance of light and shadow in our everyday life?
Shadows are formed when an opaque object or material is placed in the path of rays of light. How shadow was formed?
T he position of the shadows changes at different times of the day. What did you observe with the position and length of shadows at different times of the day?
Remember: Shadow are dark areas. They happen when the light is blocked by opaque objects. The Sun's position in the sky affects the length of the shadow. The position and length of shadow change. They change due to the angle and distance of the light source from the object.
Assessment Direction: Write True if the statement is correct and False if not. B. Direction: Study each illustration. Answer the questions that follow.
Assignment! Draw and describe the changes in the position and length of your shadows from 9:00 am, 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm.
