OVERVIEW 01 Learning objectives and expected outcomes

LESSON OVERVIEW This lesson explores the world of arts, covering its definition, nature, and importance. We will learn to define arts and its various forms, understand artistic expression and interpretation, and appreciate the significance of arts in culture, society, and personal development. By the end, we will develop an appreciation of arts and its role in society and be able to identify and analyze different art forms.

DEFINING ARTS 02 What constitutes Art?

What is Art?

“Life is a work of art. If you don’t like what you see, you paint over it.” - Anonymous

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when he grows up.” - Pablo Picasso

ART c omes from the Aryan word”-ar”, meaning “to join or put together.” Greek verb “Artizen”, means to “prepare” French word “art”: means skill as a result of learning or practice (rooted during 13 th century)

The term “art” comes from Latin ars , meaning craft , skill , or a specialized technique—like carpentry, blacksmithing, or even surgery. In the ancient world , “art” referred simply to such craftsmanship—useful, skillful acts—without the modern connotations of beauty or aesthetics. During the Middle Ages , “art” broadened to include areas of scholarship—grammar, logic, astrology, even magic. It wasn’t until the Renaissance and especially the 18th century that “art” shifted toward meaning the fine arts—those distinguished by beauty rather than just utility.

MEANING OF ART As ABILITY : human capacity to make things of beauty and things that stir us; it is creativity. As PROCESS : encompasses acts, such as drawing, painting, sculpting, designing buildings, singing, dancing, and using the camera to create images or memorable works. As PRODUCT : completed work – an etching, a sculpture, a structure, a musical composition, choreography, or tapes.

MEANING OF ART Communication of certain ideas and feelings by means of a sensuous medium – color, sound, bronze, body, words, and film. It is a symbolic language marked by beauty of design and coherence of form.

T HE NATURE OF ARTS 03 Understanding Artistic Expression

Three Fundamental Assumptions about Art

a) Art Is Universal Art has been created by people across all times and places. It transcends era and culture because it meets enduring human needs and is inherently liked. Examples include enduring works such as the Iliad , Odyssey , Ramayana , and Mahabharata. As the saying goes, “art is not good because it is old, but old because it is good.”

b) Art Is Not Nature Art is always man-made; nature, however beautiful, is not art. Art is an interpretation or transformation of nature. Cezanne’s altered landscapes reflect this—they’re not mere copies of nature but filtered through perception and creative intention. The story of the blind men and the elephant illustrates how perception shapes art—that each view reflects subjective experience .

c) Art Involves Experience Art is not known through facts or description, but through direct, personal, sensory experience—seeing, hearing, feeling the artwork. A person doesn’t truly “know” a musical piece, sculpture, or painting until they experience it. Gertrude Stein summed it up simply: “I like to look at them,” referring to Picasso paintings. Art engages the perceiver's own emotions, tastes, and subjective interpretations—you can read reviews of a film, but until you watch it, you don’t truly know it.

Art has varied meanings, depending on how we connect it to life. In visual art, it may mean, a spontaneous visual representation of anyone’s imaginations, feelings and experience. a medium of expression or communication that is founded on the elements and principles of art. high-quality creative works done by recognized visual artists. To abstract painter Paul Klee, art is not an imitation of things but an attempt to make these things visible.

1. Fine Arts – an art form developed primarily for aesthetics and concept rather than practical application. 2. Practical Arts – an art developed and created by persons for their own pleasure, application and useful purpose. Also called Manual or Functional Arts. TWO MAJOR CLASSIFICATION OF ART

FINE ARTS Drawing, culinary arts, architecture, painting, literature, dance, drama, literature and new media arts, etc.

PRACTICAL ARTS Civic art, commercial art, industrial art, handicrafts, architecture, nail art, beauty care, etc.
