Challenges and Issues Among Adolescents Adolescence is a time when we begin to discover who we are. But while we are learning about ourselves, we also experience many challenges that affect our self-esteem, behavior, and decisions. Some of these include:
Challenges and Issues Among Adolescents Physical appearance, Identity development, Gender identity,
Social cognition, Impulsivity and risk-taking, Sexual behaviors
Antisocial or delinquent behavior
Let’s explain them one by one with simple examples:
1. Physical Appearance During adolescence, our body goes through many changes because of puberty. This includes things like acne, height growth, weight gain, or voice changes. These changes can sometimes make us feel insecure or embarrassed.
1. Physical Appearance Example:
A teenager might feel shy or uncomfortable because they have acne, or because their body is not developing as fast as others in their class.
2. Identity Development This is the stage where we begin to ask, “Who am I?” or “What do I want to be in life?” It’s part of figuring out our personality, interests, and goals.
2. Identity Development Example:
A teen might realize they love drawing and start thinking about becoming an artist. That’s part of identity development.
3. Gender Identity This means understanding how you feel inside about being male, female, or something else. It’s about how you see your own gender.
3. Gender Identity Example:
Someone who is born male may feel more comfortable living as a female that’s their gender identity
4. Social Cognition (Personal Fable and Imaginary Audience) Personal fable is the feeling that “no one understands me.”Imaginary audience is the belief that everyone is watching or judging you.
4. Social Cognition (Personal Fable and Imaginary Audience) Example:
You might feel embarrassed walking into class because you think everyone is staring at your clothes even if they’re not.
5. Impulsivity and Risk-Taking Teenagers sometimes do things without thinking about the consequences, often just for fun or to fit in.
5. Impulsivity and Risk-Taking Example:
Riding a motorbike without a helmet just to look cool in front of friends.
6. Sexual Behaviors Adolescents may start becoming curious about sex or romantic relationships. It’s important to handle this responsibly.
6. Sexual Behaviors Example:
Two teens might enter a relationship, but they need guidance on respect, consent, and boundaries.
7. Antisocial and Delinquent Behavior This includes behaviors that go against rules or hurt others, like lying, skipping school, or bullying.
7. Antisocial and Delinquent Behavior Example:
A teen might join a group that vandalizes walls or bullies others online which is a harmful behavior.
