OBJECTIVES: To strengthen social interaction and combat loneliness through psychosocial activity . To educate the group about health issue, their rights and government benefits through seminar and workshops.
INTRODUCTION The global population is aging rapidly, with the number of people aged 60 and over expected to double by 2050 (United Nations, 2019). This demographic shift presents both challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, aging populations can strain healthcare systems and social safety nets. On the other hand, older adults can contribute significantly to society through their experience, skills, and wisdom.
The Philippine government has implemented several policies and programs to address the needs of senior citizens, such as the Senior Citizens Act of 2003 and the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2019. These laws provide discounts on essential goods and services, as well as access to free healthcare and legal assistance. However, there is still a need to strengthen these programs and ensure that they reach all senior citizens, particularly those living in rural areas. Tukananes Poblacion , Cotabato City, is a community with a significant senior citizen population. Many of these older adults face challenges such as poverty, isolation, and inadequate access to healthcare and social services. These challenges are exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Mindanao, which has displaced many people and disrupted essential services.
PRESENTED PROBLEM: The vast majority of Senior Citizens in Tukananes , Cotabato City that they don’t have medical maintenance and also they’re Children cannot afford to support them due to poverty. The following are the causes of the problem: Poverty Medical Maintenance Booklet
FIRST SESSION: Activity: Environmental Scanning Date: December 21, 2023 Venue: Tukananes Poblacion 7 Cotabato City Time Started: 9am Time Ended:11am Objectives : To visit the environment where Senior Citizens are living. To coordinate with Barangay Chairman and Purok Leader to conduct an seminar and activity for Senior citizens.
Minor Activity : Observing the Area Courtesy Call with the BLGU Major Activity: Coordination with the Purok Leader and identify the target group to be organize Observations : The Barangay Hall is spacious and well kept. During the visit, the social work students had encountered warm greetings. The Barangay officials are very welcoming, they allowed the social work students to visit Senior Citizens anytime up until the end. Immediately, after the Barangay Chairman gave them permission to interview and engage in activities with Senior Citizens , they scanned the environment at Tukananes Poblacion 7 Cotabato City. The area is populated. It consists of elders, children, solo parents and youths.
Second Session : Activity: Interviewing the Senior Citizens Date: December 27,2023 Venue: Tukananes Poblacion 7 Cotabato City Time Started: 8am Time Ended: 12pm Objectives : To gather information of Senior Citizens To understand their problem
Minor Activity : Gather 15 Senior Citizens Major Activity : Conduct an interview to Senior Citizens Observation : The Senior Citizens listening intently. The social work students see from their eyes their willingness to participate in the activity.
Third Session/Last Session : Activity: Seminar: Learn about healthy living and their rights and government benefits through seminar and workshops Date: January 7, 2024 Venue: Tukananes Poblacion 7 Cotabato City Time Started: 9am Time Ended: 12pm Objectives : To foster a deep understanding of community issues, social changes, and potential solutions to empower Senior Citizens to advocate for positive change. To enhance communication skills, including public speaking and effective interpersonal communication to enable them to express their perspectives and advocates for their communities To encourage Senior Citizens in active participation in community activities, fostering a sense of responsibility and connection to their surroundings.
Minor Activity: Gather the 13 Senior Citizens Major Activity: Educating the Senior Citizens Focus Group Discussion with Senior Citizens Observation : The Senior Citizens enjoyed listening intently. The Social Work students see from their eyes their willingness to participate in the activity.
EVALUATION: The three sessions that social work students held in Tukananes Poblacion 7 Cotabato City went well;
The majority of them were aware of the abilities they needed to improve.
After obtaining authorization from the barangay officials to conduct interviews and activities, the social work students successfully completed their three group sessions with the involvement Senior Citizens.
RECOMMENDATIOS: To refer the Senior Citizens in government agency like MSSD for availing the medical assistance.
