Guide to TOEFL iBT: Format and Structure
The TOEFL iBT test is taken at an authorized test center and lasts approximately 2.5 hours, including check-in.
Reading Listening
35 minutes, 20 questions. Read passages and
respond to questions.
36 minutes, 28 questions. Answer questions about
lectures or discussions.
Speaking Writing
16 minutes, 4 tasks. Talk about familiar topics
and discuss material read/heard.
29 minutes, 2 tasks. Read, listen, and type your
response.

TOEFL iBT: Scoring and Security
Scoring
Each section is scored out of 30, with a
total score ranging from 0 to 120 points.
Speaking Section
Responses are recorded and scored using AI and
qualified human raters. Expect accents from North
America, the U.K., New Zealand, or Australia.
Security Measures
Reliable security measures include biometric voice identification, facial recognition, and electronic wanding.
All grading is done anonymously to prevent cheating.
Tests are sent directly from ETS to the test taker’s computer, reducing content theft risk.

TOEFL iBT: Test Day and Preparation
The TOEFL iBT is available at authorized test centers more than 170 times a year worldwide.
