THE IMPORTANCE OF AFFECTIVE AND COGNITIVE CHALLENGE IN LANGUAGE LEARNING MATERIALS Teacher : Zully Bautista

B asic principles of SLA relevant to the development of materials for the teaching of languages Brian Tomlinson (2011) Materials should achieve impact . What is being taught should be perceived by learners as relevant and useful. Materials should expose the learners to language in authentic use. The learners’ attention should be drawn to linguistic features of the input. Materials should provide the learners with opportunities to use the target language to achieve communicative purposes . Materials should take into account that learners differ in learning styles & attitudes. Materials should not rely too much on controlled practice . Materials should provide opportunities for outcome feedback.

Guideline 1: English language teaching (ELT) materials should be contextualized. Guideline 2: Materials should stimulate interaction and be generative in terms of language. Guidelines for Designing Effective English Teaching Materials

Guideline 3: ELT materials should encourage learners to develop learning skills and strategies providing the necessary metalanguage and incorporating activities which encourage learners to assess their own learning and language development Guideline 4: ELT materials should allow for a focus on form as well as function. need to encourage learners to take an analytical approach to the language in front of and around them , and to form and test their own hypotheses about how language works

Guideline 5: Guideline 6: ELT materials should offer opportunities for integrated language use. ELT materials should be authentic. TEXT & TASK

Guideline 7: ELT should link to each other to develop a progression of skills, understandings and language items . Guideline 8: ELT materials should be attractive Physical appearance User-friendliness Durability Ability to reproduced

Guideline 9: : ELT materials should have appropriate instructions Guideline 10: ELT materials should be flexible flexibility is also possible in approach, level, methodology, logistics, technology, teaching style, evaluation procedures and expected outcomes. instructions need to be effective, they should be written in language that is appropriate for the target learners
